can't access Windows update
I can't seem to connect to Windows Update. My computer is set to "on" for
automatic updates, but if I try to go to the website through a browser I get
the page that says Internet Explorer can't display page. I've tried from
several different links in several different websites and I get the same
result every time. I run Windows XP home with service pack 2(I think). Any

Forgot boot up user name and password
My friend got a laptop from a friend and when he turned the computer on it
asked for a user name and password, well, he doesn't know it. How can he get
past this or how can he erase the hard drive without having this information.

Firewall has dectected an application listening for incoming traff
I got a lot of messages similar the following message in security event log.
As I doesn't get any configuration information for my previous colleague and
I don't very familiar with system process for XP. I don't sure it's cause
incorrectly configured services or incorrectly set firewall.
Any suggestion what I should check first?

in a newtwork i did not authorize! help! 911!
Users listed in network: 2 administrators, master browser.. etc. I am also
told to contact the administrator when i try to view workgroup computers..
not accessible to me, etc. when i try to run norton, it will not allow me b/c
it says it can't run simultaneously while another comp (one of my parasites)
is using this service. What can I possibly do?!!...

Monitor for DNS changes in event viewer?
Been trying to track down how to see if the DNS setting were altered recently
on a few of user boxes.
Is there some Event viewer ID I s hould be looking for or maybe something in
PerfMon I can setup for this in this future?

XP Pro password not working!
I have recently turned my computer into a dual boot system by adding xp pro
on a seperate HD. Have been using pro and getting it up to speed and all of
a sudden today when I booted up Pro asks me for a password which it has never

Accessing owner folder on external drive
The system board went dead on my desk top so I turned the hard drive into an
external drive intending to access the files on it from my laptop computer.
Both computers were XP SP2. The files I need are in the Owner folder under
Documents and Settings, but it will not give me access to the folder. Is
there a way to sign in my password as owner on this exernal drive so that it

I was given a compact persario xp system I went and bought memory for it so I
could run the system however when I try to log on I get an administrators
password from the previous owner (who is now deceased) how do I get around
this so I can use the full capabilities of the operating system would like to

Is This a trojan horse?
Hi all,
I found there is a ssdt hook to ntconnectport function (0x1f) in my windows xp sp2,
the function address was changed to 0x86xxxxxx (which was changed after reboot) and
not within any module(RootkitRevealer and RkUnhooker show "unknown module filename").
maybe it's a trojan horse?

Change IE start page from my program - how?
During installation, my program asks the user if they want to change
their browser start page, but even if they say "Yes" I'm unable to
modify the registry. If I open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft
\Internet Explorer\Main with KEY_READ and KEY_WRITE permissions and
then try to modify the "Start Page", it returns error 5

Power outage-now XP Home wants a password
We have Windows XP. Normally there is only one user, and a password is
not required. However, we had a power outage and suddenly at the
welcome screen XP wants a password for the user, and of course there is
no password.
We tried logging on in safe mode, selected administrator and selected

recent security patch? certain V scroll bars disappear
in my yahoo mail and in dreamweaver 8 where there are smaller client
windows that can have vertical scroll bars, the scroll bars are
missing. the only way I can scroll is with the scroll wheel on my
mouse (I am thankful to have one).
It has been this way for a couple of months, so I don't know what
update did this.

infected XP PC - can't get to security sites or run security tools
Hi - I a looking for help to clean my infected XP system. I am actually on a
different computer now as my infected system (desktop - wireless) can't
access security sites.
The problem started Dec 2nd, 2008. I'm running XP SP 3. The system was set

What is this program in the taskbar?
I'm using Windows Home XP. As the system is booting up, an unlabeled window
header flashes briefly on the screen, and an unidentified program shows up

Lock out of account password
I can not enter my alphabetic part of my password for at&t account. The
numaric numbers will go in fine. I hit something on the keyboard and a screen
came up saying something. I did not read the information I just clicked ok.

Disabling Keyboard Keys
I recently purchased a special children's keyboard that does not have many
of the special keys such as the function keys, Windows key, Context Menu
key, etc. However, it does still have the Ctrl and Alt keys. I would like to

SIGVERIF lists 2 files not in a directory
Hi,
I ran SIGVERIF just for maintenance reasons, and it listed 2 files
CTPXINST.EXE and CTTELE.DLL in c:\windows\temp but I do not see those
files with Windows Explorer - I seen them actually in c:\windows
\system32
Is this an error with sigverif or are these 2 files hidden for some
reason in temp? Thanks....

We have a custom FTP client app (made by a customer) used to Upload docs.
Insted a standard FTP is used a home-made FTP client because the app
generates a "receipt" fo the uploaded docs.
We have several problems using this particular software and only if we
disable XP Firewall the app works well. In the Vista OS works fine.

Security update will not install KB954430 Error Code: 0X02
I was having some updates to fail to install. I got all of them to install by
reinstalling windows installer except the security update. One of the updates
was SP3. The update that is failing is for SP2. I also noticed that the Add &
Remove programs will not open.
