Windows versions CD
It doesn`t affect me yet (but will eventually) but I have noticed through
friends that when they upgrade or get a new laptop they do not get a CD for
windows as it is pre installed.
What does one do if there is a need for reformatting the hard drive? Or for
example in a tower unit the hard drive went bust.
I am interested for future reference.

What's the best use of three PCs at home?
I've got a PC running XP and a Laptop running Vista connected via a wireless
network at home. My girlfriend has just moved in and brought her PC (XP) with
her.
I've heard people say that with multiple computers you can do things like
set one of them up as a server or set one up as a firewall or something to
free the others up and improve performance...

scandisk - every startup
Scandisk runs on a partition (which i normally use to install most of my
programs) at every startup of windows. This is not a primary partition on
which window is installed.
I suspect it is Avast.
How can i stop it?

Can't log in or boot from CD
I have 4 user accounts on a PC. When I try and log in, it begins to log in
then saves settings and logs out. It does the same on 2 accounts with
passwords and 2 without.
I assume I need to boot from the XP CD and repair or reinstall Windows?
However. After about 20 or 30 restarts using F8 F10 or F10, the only screen
I have managed to get to doesn't bring up the option to boot from CD ...

.JPGs make copies of themselves!
My father-in-law has a computer running XP that does the darndest thing. If
you hold down the CTRL key and click a number of .jpg photos he has on his
Desktop, and then delete the group, within a few seconds copies of these
photos populate the Desktop. Thy keep multiplying like bunnies! Other files
don't do this, only .jpg files. He runs Picassa, which I know nothing about,
otherwise...

Open XP Compressed Attachment Online How?
Win XP Scenario: I send an email to something like a Hotmail account and use
Rt Clk "Send To" XP Compression for an Attachment... AND I will see the email
from another computer later with UNKNOWN OS .... when Online later & inside

Creating new profile with limited processes?
I want to create a new user profile with few few processes running. I
often use my laptop computer in an environment where I do not have a
WiFi connection, but my various programs are constantly searching for
a connection to call home and check for updates. There's also many
functions and programs I do not need to run in this environment.

Active Sync will not synchronize
I have a problem with Active Sync 4.1. I have a UT Starcom PPC6700 PDA phone
and it sync's great for 2-4 weeks then all of a sudden stops synchronizing.
I delete the partnerships and still no sync. It will connect and I can look
at files in the phone but will not synchronize. I have to do a hard reset on
the phone to get it to synchronize again every time. I have tried
uninstalling ...

GPEDIT Settings
Windows XP, ALL the latest updates, etc. along with IE7. Went in to set some

XP and RAID1
I'm giving some thought to setting up a new computer to have two large
drives configured as RAID1, i.e. the second drive will be identical to the
first and mirror everything on the first drive.
If I do that, I assume that my install of XP Pro is going to be a bit
different. What is the proper sequence of events? In other words, when do I

Unable to download ad-ons
Hopefully, this is the correct thread for me.
Am unable to download update for Adobe Flash, java or anything else. I
cannot download microsoft updates or programs from their website. Microsoft
support office helper tried to get me to turn over my computer for her to
look at (fastsupport.com) but I was unable to download the platform to enable

Measurement units
I have office 2002 with windows XP.
I few days ago MS updated both. Of course I had to reset all of my defults
but that is not the problem.
My units in PowerPoint changed from inches to cm. I went to control panel
and selected regional and language settings. I selected customize at this
window. It showed under measurement U. S. but they are not. So I decided to
see if I could change them...

Start Menu Problems
The first time I click on a start menu item I get a Widows cannot Find
Message, for example I clicked on Control Panel and got the message: Windows
Cannot Find'/idlist,:1664:1588,'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and
try again. The second time I click on it it opens. Also if I click on Start

Non-admin acct. problems
I am having 2 problems with a non-admin acct. I set up.
1. I can not dial out even if I am logged out my admin acct.
When I open up Phone and Modem Options, it says "I may have a problem
starting telephony services."
I can dial out OK on my admin acct.
2. I keep having to re-enter my registration code for pkzip on my non-
admin acct.

Virus blocking fix on XP....
Trying to salvage my nephew's business pc. His daughter used it when
hers went down and got it loaded with viruses. One is Spyware Guard

Windows Shortcut ?
Hello all,
I'm trying to burn a shortcut file to CD that points to Microsoft Access
along with some other files . When Windows gets to the shortcut file a popup
window appears and it shows that MSACCESS.EXE will be burned instead of the
actual shortcut file.

Programs adding themselves to Start Menu
The XP start menu has a section where recently-run programs add
themselves. Normally I don't mind this because it makes them easy to
run again if I want to. But I'd like to change this behavior in two
ways:
First, I'd like some programs never to be added to the menu, even when
I run them. An example is Acrobat Reader, which I _never_ run from
the Start menu, but only by clicking on a .p...

Is there somewhere a rational analysis of the reasons people prefer
Windows XP over Vista?

Video screen capture - with timed start stop?
What video screen capture programs are available, with timed start/
stop?
That is, being able to capture, at a decent framerate, the contents of
a screen.
Preferrably capturing to WM or AVI format.
Preferrably free - but inexpensive is ok too (but want at least two

Windows Movie Maker
Okay, Movie Maker has always worked fine, but all of a sudden when I make a
video, it exits out all by itself. When a the video starts to look good and
okay and at some point when I add a clip or a picture, it's gone.
