Can not reload Windows XP, newer version
I have Windows XP Home Edition on my laptop, it came with it. It has been
giving me problems so co-worker suggested reloading Windows. I tried to do
that, but I get a message saying that the edition of Windows on the computer
is newer than the version I am trying to load. This is puzzling, the CD I am
using is the one that came with the computer and I have not loaded any newer
versio...

xp home & laptop power options
Hello,
I have a Sony VAIO laptop, about 3 years old. Windows XP Home edition.
I use the "hibernation" mode a lot, which allows you to shut down with your
desktop and open windows intact, & resume where you left off.
I normally plug my laptop into the wall power between uses.
Lately, my laptop seems to be waking up out of hibermation mode

Still not able to search within files (e.g. .html, .htm) for spec
I do not know what change has brought about this issue again, but as an
example of the issue:
When I do a search from the file explorer when there are .html files in the
directory/sub-directories, the search does not return results if the search
text is not in the displayable text [the text that would appear if the .html

Unable to install 9800 GT+ video card into Windows XP Home HELP
I have a new system I built with onboard video and wanted to upgrade for
gaming. I have disabled the olnboard video and removed the old drivers , even

Changing personal folder name after changing user name
I have recently built a new computer and installed Win XP on a new hard
drive. During the set up process, it did not prompt and wait for a response
regarding users for this computer so it set up a user as Owner. I have since
gone in and changed the Owner account to be my name and also added another
user to be my husband. However, the personal folder under Documents and

SP3 Problem (maybe)
The first time SP3 was installed on my XP Pro (SP2) system, I noticed
problems, like general slowness, more disk activity, and also after being up
for a while, when I launched some apps I would just get a stub (maybe 80K in
TaskManager) and the app would be uncloseable (I'd have to reboot). Various
apps from various vendors were affected. So, I uninstalled SP3 and everything

SP3 and SP2
I'm about to clean down my PC and reinstall XP Home from scratch.
I have SP2 on CD and will soon also download and save SP3.
Question: if applying SP3 do I also need to install SP2 beforehand, or
is SP3 cumulative?

SP3
Currently i use broadband connection to connect to the internet. Recently i
installed SP3 on my laptop and desktop computer. After installing SP3 my
internet connection stopped working. I checked all the configurations, ran
diagnostics software provided by my service provider and took all other

Yes, it's hard to believe but today's chat with a MS Techy lasted 6.5 hours
and dwarfed the 1 hr tech chat with Intel.
So if you're having problems with WinXP w/SP3 and any of your components are
manufactured by Intel, we've located your problem.
Believe it or not, the MS tech chat revealed the following:

comdlg32.dll errror when printing from various applications
Windows XP Home SP2
The computer has 2 printers ( shared ) installed on other computers.
The printers are HP LaserJet 1200 and a Canon LBP3200.
The problem occurs evertime I try to print from various applications but MS
Office.
The error message as I see in the Application Events is "Faulting

Windows XP standard vs. Windows x64
I was recently handed a laptop to reformat. The owner gave me a Windows XP
Pro (w/SP2) disk and they also gave me a Windows XP Pro x64 Edition disk.
I've never worked with the x64 edition. I know how to reformat computers but
I've never been given 2 disks before. Am I supposed to use both of these
disks to reformat it? Or is it possible that one disk was erroneously given

The property page shows the target to be:

which is grayed.
What is "Apple Software Update"
I'd expect to find a file path.

Conversion to NTFS
I converted my c: drive from Fat 32 to NTFS, using the Win XP SP2 Install
CD. The disk is a 50GB SATA.
1. The cluster size for the NTFS, as shown in the disk defragmenter, is 4
kb. Is this normal?
2. The NTFS master file record as viewed on my defragmenter takes up about 7
GB on my hard drive. The whole installed Win XP system is less than that:

Windows Explorer crashes in several circumstances

OUCH! Disconnecting USB drive. How long before write cache is flushed automatically??????
Most write caches that I've had experience had a timeout associated
with them beyond which whatever was there pending output was flushed.
But I recently disconnected a USB drive after 45 minutes of inactivity
(after a big write) and it kicked out a "delayed write" error. Huh?
What is the time limit for this?...
