Formatting a new hard disk
I am trying to install a new Hard drive. The new one is 160 GByte the old one
is 32 Gbyte. I have linked the unformatted PATA IDE as a slave.
1. Windows recognises the drive - not as a hard disk but as a removeable
drive and asks for a disk to be inserted. Is there anything I can do to get
around this?
2. If I can get around the first problem will the XP format command create

What is it about the WinXP Quick Launch that makes it so very sensitive?
What is it about the Quick Launch bar that makes it disappear whenever the
WinXP OS locks up and has to be rebooted?
Is there something really really special about the QuickLaunch bar that is
related to booting WinXP that every other Windows interface doesn't have
(or does have)?

XP - where to get etc?
A mate (v. wrongly!) uses a pirated copy of Windows XP. Because he can't
receive updates - keeps getting a Validate your Windows - message ...and due
to his guilty conscience has decided to go legitimate.
How does he do this?
Presumably purchase a legit copy of Windows and install.
Q1. Will a simple OEM Windows XP package be ok?

Show Desktop Icon missing.
I was just issued a used computer from my company and noticed that it does

Install problems
When I have a program with an application, I uninstall it and try and
install it again.. however it won't allow me to choose location... there is
just run and save as the options.. Any help appreciated..
btw.. I have been off line for 2 weeks, my ethernet card finally bit the
dust... did a system repair.. and I couldn't connect when I came back on.. I

time limits in XP
Hello
I'm wrestling with several third party applications to set a time limit for
use of the PC. Nothing works 100%. My son can't stop playing online games. I
want to give him 3 hours a day to play online.
If anybody has a good suggestion for me, please mail me.
Maybe someone can write a little program that counts the time when the PC is
started and automatic logoff when time is over. ...

questions about reloading WinXP
I'm working on our church office Gateway pc, running WinXP. Some OS files
have gotten corrupted, and I want to reinstall WinXP. We have the bundled
software CD that came with the pc.
1. Do I have to reformat the hard drive before reloading WinXP? If so, how
do I do that?
2. Do I need any kind of WinXP install programs that aren't with the OEM
CD?

Other users cannot access web
My home computer has four users, the administrator(parent) account and my
three kids. For some reason the kid accounts cannot access the internet
since using XP. In fact, just upon logging in as one of them, they get the
error message that asks if you want to send the error to Microsoft or not.
I'm sure there's some easy answer, but I cannot find it!

NTLDR is missing
I get this error message when I try to start XP. Thinking my hard drive had
gone belly up, I put in my spare HD with a Ghost copy on it. I get the same
error message, so I know the trouble isn't in my HD. I search the web and
found a web site, Tinyempire.com that would format a floppy so I could boot
from the floppy and run a certain program that would cause my HD to boot
into XP. I sus...

In the last few days when ever I close my machine I get the message:

movie maker and sp2
I dont have movie maker and the MS website says it should be there after the
sp2 upgrade (which I did succesfully). Any idea how to get it alone, or can I
try to install sp2 again without messing things up? Not a complete newbie but
not a geek either, and trying to set this machine up for the kids....

error when trying to install xp pro sp2 on mac pro
after all setup items load and it trys to startup setup i get this
error it says shut down setup so as not to damage system then gives me

Locked out of Options on Internet Explorer V7
I think my computer may be high jacked, because I cannot open Internet
Options under the Tools tab. I get a message when I try to open that "This
operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
Please contact your system administrator".
This is a home computer and has no password restrictions set up.
Any suggestion are appreciated.

How do I customize menus in My Computer?
Hi there
I (or my kids) have accidentally reversed the ranking of commands in the
FILE menu for each Directory Folder in My Computer.
SEARCH... has now taken priority over OPEN in the ranking. So, when I
double-click a directory icon, the search function launches. I want my
double-clicks to open folders, not search them.
How do I restore OPEN to priority ranking in the File menu?

can't connect to bellsouth's ng server
Hi,
I have a dsl setup in florida, and through it connect to BellSouth's
newsgroup and mail servers. I set up outlook 2007,
and IE6's newsgroup reader, in florida on the
bellsouth acct. where it works perfectly.
In NJ, where I am now, I have a comcast broadband acct,
and connect via wifi on this laptop.
I connect fine to the comcast acct internet wise, but,
I can't connect to bellsouth's...

can't get past opening web page
We had several power disruptions last night, seemingly minor. Very late
last night, I found neither of our pcs would go online (his 'n her pcs).
Prior to this, and for several years, both have worked fine.
I use DSL, and have a Linksys hub/router joining to two pcs together. The

Uninstall programs not removed from Add/Remove programs
I have Windows XP on my computer. Recently, I removed several programs by
using the Add/Remove programs feature in control Panel. They were all

Slow to respond after mouse click
System is XP Pro
When I click on any icon, file or command there's a delay of about 2 seconds
before there's a responce.
It happens on the desktop, in IE7, in Windows explorer and most offer apps.

IIS doesn't seem to be running...
Hello,
I am trying to find out if I have got PWS (Personal Web Server) running
correctly. I don't think so - but I don't know what to do.
I have installed IIS. But when I try to get a local site up, it says it
cannot find the file. I see nothing.

Zone Alarm settings?
Laptop wirelessly connected to 3Com ADSL modem/router, desktop hard wired to
same.
Print server also connected to router.
After updating Zone Alarm laptop & desktop can't see each other and can't
print from laptop but can access internet from either.
Works OK with ZA turned off on both PC's.
