Replacing the CMOS battery
When I replace the CMOS battery in my Dell desktop will my XP(MCE)
recover its settings on its own or will I have to provide all those
settings myself?
There is a DOS program (CMOSRAM2) that copies and restores all those
settings automatically for Win98. Is there such a program for XP?
Thanks...

I have recently noticed that the button with the left-pointing arrow that
separates the taskbar from the notification area has disappeared, and I
cannot "show hidden icons" any more.
I have gone to taskbar/properties/notification area and reset the
properties, but that has not fixed it. Any ideas how to repair this? (Note
that taskbar behavior is normal on another ...

shut down is very slow
I am having a problem shutting down my computer.
When I click Start>turn off computer it takes around 2 minutes before the
shut down dialog appears. When I click Shut Down, it gets to the "Windows is
shutting down" screen, then hangs for another 2 minutes.
This only started happening recently, and a couple of weeks ago it would
shut down completely within 45 seconds.

how write files and folders to a dvd disc
I have a few folders which I would like to back up to a dvd disc (these
folders are about 3.5Gb in total, which is why I don't want to use a CD disc).
Can anyone tell me how to do this? Do I need any special software to do it?
The only option i am getting at the moment is to send them to the built-in
CD drive, but that won't qwrite to DVD's.

Cant change Read only attribute for folder
I have an application I am writing and when I tried to run it I got the
following message:
Visual Studio could not copy a support file to this location C:\xxxxxxxxxx.
Please verify the path exists and is writable.
Sooo I opened Explorer and went to the folder and found the read-only bit
was set so I unchecked it and hit OK. I got the same message so I once

Notification Area Icon Issue
For some unknown reason, well unknown to me, at times, when a few select
programs
(unrelated programs i.e.games , a yahoo window) open an icon of a
small black rotary telephone, that has the handset rise as if ringing,
appears in the notification area in the bottom right of the window. This is
accompanied by what I would describe as a wave sound of "exclamation", for
lack of a better word....

Help needed re "print screen", Word, msconfig
I'm sure this question has been asked previously, but I can't find an
easy solution to the problem. - Starting with msconfig, I'm trying to
print out several of the listings of programs (e.g., lists of start up
programs, lists of services). Unfortunately, I can't print out the
lists directly. So I have pasted the PC screens showing the listings

How to run SCANDISK Surface Scan in XP
Hello,
Does anybody know how to run a Scandisk surface scan the old-fashioned
(Windows 98) way, where it gives a VISUAL representation of how many
bad sectors you have on a disk?
I've run the new-and-improved "CHKDSK /R /F" but that doesn't give me
the visual information that I'm looking for. Is there any way to boot
an XP machine into DOS and FORCE it to run a Scandisk surface scan

I hope someone can help me with this. It is quite odd. I have two offices.
Office A and Office B. I regularly use VPN at both locations. Office A uses

seconds. After that happened, I discovered that I could access the server,
get email (both POP3 and Exchange) but could not access the internet. I

Problem Creating Shortcut to Folder
I've had desktop shortcuts to frequently used folders since the day the
Earth cooled.
Today, none of them work - that is, clicking on the shortcuts produces a
long pause, then nothing. I even recreated several with the same result.
Shortcuts to websites work normally
I can't for the life of me think of what I could have done to cause this.
