Creating an association to open files
Hi guys,
You probably have been asked before, I have a Gif file that needs to be
opened. I know to go to the control panel and Folders, but do not know
what action to take, could use some advice please

Leave on, turn off, standby, hibernate,
I use my computer throughout the day, morning, lunch, evening....Is it best
to shut down, leave on,hibernate, or go into standby...it seems when i leave
it in standby, the power goes off & when i hit power button my desktop comes
up instantly....i like this feature however now that does not work......i'm
afraid if i leave the computer on 24/7 i will wear out hard drive, burn out
power so...

Can't rename folders (all of a sudden!)
XP Media center, 1.5 year old HP laptop. Suddenly can't rename folders. Right
clicking on folder, there is no "rename" option anymore. Clicking on dropdown
"File" tab, "rename" is grayed out. What to do? (Why do things change? Did
the last Windows update screw something up?)
This is not a networked laptop. I am the administrator (or at least have
been all along!). ...

System Restore Question
I have never had this problem before. I have tried several times to do a
system restore and each time after reboot a red warning appears on the
system restore page saying a restore cannot be done and that no changes were
make to my system. I have unchecked "Turn Off System Restore on all drives"
in My Computer. I have tried to restore using a pre-fixed restore point and

"My Computer" opens Windows Installer
Computer Club member's computer with Windows XP SP3 376MB RAM (256 just
installed), no viruses, no malware, no Hijackers (that can be found).
The internet wasn't accessible. A system restore to December 5, cleared a
bunch of problems, as did the additional 256MB RAM.

Where is 'folder options'?
This seems weird. I want to change some folder options, but I can't
find any tab or icon that will allow me to. I want to allow viewing
of so-called hidden files. I know where the check box used to be, but
I can't find how to get there now.

still having a problem with shutdown speed
I am still having a problem with shutdown speed.
There's plenty of advice on what to do decrease shut down time, but I
can't find a thing about the long time it takes between selecting
"Turn Off Computer" in the "Start" menu and finally getting the actual
"Turn Off Computer" box to actually turn off the computer. It sounds
like something is running during that time period, at least the HD'...

Conversion between various video & audio formats
Could anyone advise me a good software to do conversion between any video &
audio formats?
I have used "Total viedo convertor" to convert a .wma file into various
viedo formats (.mpg, .flv, .avi), but none of them can be posted to Facebook
or Youtube (the latter 3 viedo formats should be acceptable to Facebook &

RoboType program
Many years ago I got the RoboType program from PC Magazine (when the
programs were still free to subscribers). I have used it very much and

Task Pane
When working in Excel, I can only see the icons in the task pane, such as
Open a workbood, New, New from existing workbook and New from
Template......THE FONTS/WORDS DO NOT APPEAR NEXT TO THE ICONS!!!!! It use to,
but I've tried changing the settings etc....It is a great feature, when it
works!

Need help pls
Hi
Hubby was on pc and we think we have virus. All the icons from desktop are
gone. I can't use the windows button or anything. We tried to go to safe
mode but that is not working. We put the xp pro disk in cd drive to get in
to safe mode no luck. How can we see and scan for virus if we can't see any
icon or get in to programs?

I bought a lop top from Bestbuy, it's a HP. When I bought the computer it
came with software (XP service Pack 2) but it did not come with the basic
software package but on the bottom of the computer it has the product key
number. How do I get a copy of the orginal XP software?...

Hello
What does one do when the chkdsk run hangs up in the middle of the run? If
it will not contunue what is the preferred method of ending the run? I have
asked this question on numerous forms and discussion groups and have made

File Syncronization Issues when using Windows XP PRO Service Pack
I have a new Dell laptop with Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. When we mark
folders to be available offline it either disconnects from the network and
doesn't finish marking them or it disconnects from the network when it has
completed. Is this not working because of XP Service pack 3? Should I
uninstall SP3?...

computer won't go into standby mode
My cnewer compute with XP would go into standby mode just fine then all of a
sudden, nothing, it will not go into standby mode after trying every
concievable power confiuration, screen saver off, on & all different power
configs.....monitor, on-off-----hard disks, on-off.....system standby,

Mouseover selection setting?
When I mouseover an icon in a folder it gets selected. I only want to have
an icon selected when it is clicked. Is there a setting that will do this?

Taskbar
Hi,
I have Windows XP Pro. When I unlock my taskbar, there is a vertical line
between the last object on the task bar and the tray that you can hoover over
to produce a two-headed arrow; moving that vertical line over objects on the
taskbar hides them. I don't know what happens, but that vertical line no

I have just purchased an 8 GB Lexar USB drive. It comes with SecureII
software, which is supposed to allow me to encrypt files & Shred sensitive
