Delete IE 8 Beta 2
The Microsoft instructions to perform the subject operation say to enter
:Program and Features" in the "Start Search" box.
I cannot find a "Start Search" box so I entered it in the "Search". It came
up empty.
Microsoft says if the above does not work, then enter a long command "at an
elevated command prompt".
Where do I find an "elevated command prompt"?

This Computer Club member's Windows XP system with SP3 and some 20 updates

When I was originally called on the House Call, the complaint was that the

I now have it at home and I was successful installing the miniature USB
mouse that I use with my laptop when travelling.

Can't do a clean install
I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows XP pro from a store bought
upgrade install disc onto a 3 year old Gateway laptop. Everything goes
well at first. I go through the usual install scripts, it asks for a
previous copy of Windows etc. The first time it does a required
reboot, however, it starts me back at square one, so I am going in
circles at this point. Any ideas please?...

File name color change
somehow I have changed all of desktop program file names as well as all my
"my documents" folders for all my user accounts to blue file names. (the
words are blue, no boxes, or anything else, just blue)
I have NO idea what that means, and I am sure I did not mean to do it.
Could someone please tell me how to UN do it.
Thanks!...

Is XP the same as NT5?
I have a .Net application that detects the operating system it is running on
(using the My.Computer.Info.OSFullName function). For some users it returns
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional" and for others "Microsoft Windows NT
5.1.2600 Service Pack 2". Are these in fact the same operating system and if
so why do they have different names?
Any help much appreciated,

Explorer Search... messed up?
Greetings,
I've recently noticed that the Explorer right-click search doesn't work
correctly. Maybe this is well known, but it's the first time I've noticed
this. For example, use a "temporary" folder somewhere and create 2 text
files and change their extension to '.aaa'. Note that the extension cannot
be '.txt' or the problem isn't seen. Name the files something like test_1
and test_...

I needed to replace my HDD on my 4 year old Packard Bell (PB) A714
Hi,
I needed to replace my HDD on my 4 year old Packard Bell (PB) A7145 laptop.
As readers may know PB laptops don't come with Windows XP installation disks
but rely on the use of restore disks & a restore partition on the HDD. I no
longer have the restore partition so thought that I only needed to reinstall
Windows XP and use the product key that came with the original laptop. That
did...

Details view is still a problem. Is there really no way to fix??? [WinXP, SP2]
I can't believe how stupid this problem is. I've been using various
WE replacements but when I found a solution that I thought worked re
Windows' WE, I stopped using them. I thought the WE problem was
licked. But problems keep recurring because even though my settings
last a little bit longer, eventually they revert back to some standard
only XP knows why. I've been trying to get WinXP's ...

Red X in Index
Hi,
I posted a question here a few days ago, and got an answer, but now I can't
find it.
I find this website kind of confusing.
Anyway, I'll try again. I'm running XP Home SP2 in dual boot mode with
ME. XP was installed on a new blank hard disk; ME is on the old hard disk.
When I click on Index in Help & Support in XP, all I get is a small red X
in a black box, no list. XP has b...
