External hard drive
I have two WD My Book 500GB firewire external drives. They are less
than one year old and the button on one of them has broken. Therefore, I
will not consider buying another external drive from WD.
I am considering one of the three following drives. They are all 7200
RPM and IEEE 1394 . I would appreciate any input considering which is the
best drive. Thank you in advance for ...

Why must Windows be installed first in a dual-boot?
I want to build a dual-boot PC with Vista & Linux. Both Vista & Linux have
boot loaders. Why is it necessary to install Windows first? Why can't Linux
be installed first?
I'll admit that Vista has a pretty neat feature - one can shrink or expand
the partition from within Windows. Linux requires a separate program to
shrink or expand the partition.
So, please explain why Windows must ...

Installing Vista home Premium over Vista Business

Windows Vista Business. However, when I got the machine it was in fact
loaded with Vista Business but did not include an operating system
install disc of any kind. Also, the build sheet that came with this
laptop states it should be loaded wit...

Can Vista defaults for folder / dialog interfaces be changed?
Under Windows XP, if I open up My Computer, I can go to the View
menu, Select the Toolbars option and toggle on or off the key
elements:
Standard Buttons
Address Bar
Links
I can't seem to find a way to do that in Vista.
Also, the order of elements is changed in Vista and I can't find
a way to alter that.
Is there any way to accomplish these tasks so that I can make the

Will Windows 7 be visually similar to Vista?
I'm curious if Windows 7 is going to be similar to Vista in terms
dialog box layout, GUI characteristics, etc.
Or is it going to be changed (like how XP differed from Win 98

Thanks

What is "Search Protocol Host"?
I have a new FoxConn MB with an AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core CPU and 4-Gig of RAM.
However, even this system slows down when something called
"searchprotocolhost" starts running.
That service will use 50% of the CPU and over 1-Gig of RAM when it starts.
So, what is this "service"? And, how do I turn it off?
No wonder people complain about Vista slowdowns.

Hard Drive is Write Protected?
I have Vista installed here and one of my regular internal ATA
drives has become write protected.
When I try to do anything that involves a write, Vista brings up a
message saying, "The media is write protected". This is normally
something you get when working with removable media. How can an
internal HDD be write protected?
I'm sure its *not* a permissions problem. I have Adminis...

Wireless Wireless
I am no expert, but
Possibly you have a rechargeable wireless phone next to you computer
if so move the computer away, they operate on the same frequency, could be
causing the problem?
Otherwise there could be a problem in the instructions coming out of sleep
mode talk with Microsoft.

Rastus

Second screen goes dark
Hi guys,
I have Windows Vista Ultimate with Dual Monitors. This is not really a
problem, but when I press WIN+L to lock the workstation, the second
monitor does not display the logon screen. It is just black. It does not
go on standby since I can at least see the mouse on the second screen
when it is black. Anyway to make the background appear on both screens
when locking the workstation?

but the file (a .tiff file) cannot be seen by Vista (as if it doesn't exist)
