WSUS 2.0 Client-Side to Server-Side
All,
We have WSUS 2.0. I need to change (at least temporary) from Client-Side
Targeting to Server-Side Targeting. Currently have GPO's in my machine OU's
pointing to my Computer Groups in WSUS.
If I change my WSUS Computer Options to "Use the Move computers task in
Windows Server Update Services" for Server-Side Targeting, can I leave my
GPO's alone or will I need to Disable or Not C...

Can I use .net framework 3.0 instead of 2.0 when installing WSUS 3
I would like to build up a new WSUS 3.0 server. I was wondering if I could
install .net framework 3.0 instead of .net framework 2.0 and still have a
fully functional WSUS 3.0 server environment? Has this been tested?...

Move WSUS 3.0 installation to new server
Our WSUS server is due for replacement soon, so I'll need to move the WSUS 3
installation to the new one.
Is there some documentation on how to do this, because I can't seem to find
any?
Also, I've got a couple of other questions:
Can you admin the database using SQL 2005 Management Studio on the local
server, I've set it to look for the embedded database but it can't seem to

Deployment question
I have set up WSUS four times on my network of under 10 computers and not
once have I been able to get any computer updated. I am assuming I must have
Active Directory installed for this to function, but I want to know why since
AD is not feasible to this network.
Before you respond please know that I refuse to set up auto update on any of

Deployment question
I am planning on setting up two WSUS 3.0 servers up both in the same domain.
One will be an upstream and retrieve updates from the internet, while the
other will be a downstream and recieve its updates from the upstream server.
I will operate them in autonomous mode. Will it make a difference if one of
or both of these servers use an SQL 2005 database as oposed to a local MSDE?

WSUS 3.0 SQL 2005 Embedded Edition Limitations?
As I have run WSUS 2.0 using WMSDE and understood there were some limitations
running WMSDE as opposed to the full blown MS SQL Server 2000. Can anyone
explain what the limitations are running SQL 2005 Embedded Edition? Is it
similar to that of WMSDE?
Thanks...

Will upgrading to WSUS 3 wipe out MSDE being used by Backup Exec?
I noticed after upgrading our main WSUS server to version 3 it uninstalls
MSDE to use the internal database engine. I still have a downstream WSUS 2
server which runs currently on MSDE. Problem is, that server also has Backup
Exec installed on it, which shares MSDE. They are different instances, but
it looks to me like the WSUS 3 installer uninstalls MSDE completely?...

Hierarchy question re: Deployment guide
Hi,
I'm going over the deployment guide for WSUS3.0 and in the WSUS server
Hierarchies I read this:
When you set up a WSUS server hierarchy, you should point Automatic
Updates on all WSUS servers to the farthest downstream WSUS server in
the hierarchy. This shields the entire chain from server-to-server
protocol-breaking changes, because the downstream WSUS server can be
used to update ...

architectural question
I have about 20 servers at a data center that I'd like to manage w/ WSUS.
We have a fiber connection to them from the office but our lease will be up
in a year and I think we'll probably move, giving us a garden variety T1 or
something.
My question is should I set up an internally synchronized WSUS servers at
the data center & the office, or maintain 2 independent ones. given the

We recently upgraded from WSUS 2.0 to 3.0. The upgrade seemed to go smoothly
and it correctly synchs updates and we saw all clients in the MMC. However,
since the upgrade, none of our clients are reporting to the server anymore
and are not downloading updates. In the WindowsUpdate.log, I am seeing this
error:

Can WSUS patch these MS applications?
SQL 2000?
Office 2000?
MSDE?
MSXML 2.6?
MDAC?
Also, where can I find a comprehensive list of what WSUS 3.0 *can* patch.
The ones I've found are vague. For example they list SQL and SQL 2005. What
is *SQL*?
Thanks.

Update sign in system tray
I am on a SBS2003 R2 by RDP. The icon in the system tray says that there are
new updates available. There is a local WSUS 2 on this SBS. Whenever I click

seconds the icon shows up again.
What happens here? How can I start the installation?
Thanks, Franz

Cannot set deadlines when approving updates - selection is grayed
In WSUS 3 when I select "Approve" the only further choices I have available
or "Approved for Install" or "Not Approved." All the other options are grayed
out, including the option to set a deadline. Does this have something to do
with inheritance?
I'm using WSUS version 3.0.6000.374.
