Firewall/ICS on workstations ?
RE: SBS2k3 Workstations using XPsp2
Assuming that you have a good firewall appliance at the WAN, (I am using
Untangle) and since XP only has a unidirectional firewall, is there any need
to have the workstation's XP firewall/ics service enabled ? Do I need it on
to protect the LAN side from other workstations' rogue programs ? Is the
redundancy a best practice ?
Since Vista is bidire...

SBS2003 backup solution recommendations
We have a Dell Poweredge 2600 server, with a Powervault 110T LTO-1 tape
drive which has been working great for over 4 years now, but I'm afraid the
tape drive may have failed. I'm working on finding that out for sure now.
But I was wondering what anyone would recommend for a replacement and
whether to stick with tape or opt for a couple of external USB hard drives.
We do a full backup e...

2003 - 2008 Exchange Email Forwarding Problem!
SBS 2008 - and have just did the migration from SBS 2003 - 2008, pretty easy
once it was completed and the instructions followed (confusingly at times).
The email being used is pop3 accounts, and on the old SBS 2003 server, I had
a user who had his email hosted directly on the ISP's server, so he could
log in there to read his email (please don't ask - this is the way he wanted
it).

My Documents redirection to another server?
Hi --
I have an SBS 2003 SP2 box acting as the domain controller, and a second
Server 2003 Standard R2 SP2 box as a file server.
Is it possible to set up My Documents redirection and roaming profiles on
the SBS box to save all these files to the file server?
Thanks,
CL

How to change the default config away from using proxy
Initially when we setup the SBS2003, we setup the proxy server.
Subsequently, we have discontinued using the proxy server and need the client
computers to point to "Automatically Detect" and not check the "Use proxy..."
box .
Problem: when we create a new user in the Domain the setting for that user
are set to use the proxy setting. We have to manually uncheck the "Use a

Installation Failure, Critical Update for Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 (KB940357)
Client is running SBS2003. I installed Update Services from the SBS2003 R2
CDs so I assume that makes it R2.
The patch KB940357 will not install.
Key sticking point appears to be: "Setup encountered an error: This update
can only be installed on Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2"
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
David

New SBS 2008 install looking good
Hi,
Thanks to all who assisted with the transition to SBS 2008. The new install
appears to be almost there. I literally gave up on migration. It seems that
the migration path is fraught with difficulties in spite of following all
the best advice and Best Practices. In my case I needed to place in on the
same server DELL 2950. I migrated an SBS 2003 instance to a high end PC
using JM's...

UPS for SBS2008 on Hyper-V server ?
Hello,
I am currently planning the deployment of a new SBS2008 + TS2008 system. I
am currently testing this setup in a virtualized way on top of Hyper-V
Server. One of the questions that I still have is how do you protect such a
system with a UPS? Would you recommend some USB/Serial UPS that you connect
to with some application like Fabulatech ?
Thanks,
Xavier

Foreign Language SPAM and Exchange 2003 IMF

Has anyone had success or can offer any advice re this issue?

have tightened the IMF SCLs to settings of 4 (Gateway Blocking) and 3 (Store

SBS 2003 -> 2008 Migration Question
This is a follow-up to yesterday's post. I have a friend who has a 5 year
old Dell 400SC with SBS 2003 SP1/E2K3 SP1. Due to a small system partition,
I am unable to install Windows 2003 SP2. My friend recently purchased a new
Dell T300 server with SBS 2008. Can I still migrate the mailboxes and data
from the old 2003 to 2008 with W2K3 SP2 and E2K3 SP2?...

being accessed from the network. The computer can no longer be

Adding Intel SS4000e NAS Server to Domain
As mentioned in my prior post, I am just completing the migration from
SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. One of the issues I am having is that I am
unable to join an Intel SS4000e NAS server to the domain. I am trying
to set it up so that it uses active directory to determine the user
list and login information (which is how it was configured on SBS
2003).
When I go through the steps, it sees the SB...
