DNS Server Crashes - Error 1053
Hi,
On a Win 2003 Server, my DNS service won't start, leading the boot up being
slow, and most of my service not to start.
I just installed SP2, but it seems it doesn't fix that problem :

Problems with DNS-replication and DNS Event ID 4515
Hello everyone.
I got the event ID 4515 and I've been reading
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/867464 a few times now.
The subdomain doesn't replicate the contoso.com zone but I'm a bit unsure
how to see what zone to delete. Looking on one of the DC's in the subdomain,
the CN=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDNSZones, DC=contoso, DC=com has a zone with
loads of records (no surprise ...

DNS not resolving anymore, but not crashed
Hi
Everything worked fine for years and now I got this strange problem. We have
2 DNS servers for our domain. Both are forwarding the unresolved requests to
our internet gateway server. This server also runs a dns server but doesn't
have zones defined and only forwards everything to our ISP-DNSes. (By the
way, all servers are 2003 R2 SP2).

Non FQDN queries failing
Our Windows 2000 SP4 DNS servers return a reply code of "Server Failure (2)"
if a non fully qualified query is sent to them. This was never an issue in
the past, since all clients had the Primary DNS suffix assigned via AD. We
now have a 3rd party appliance that is trying to do DNS queries based on just
hostnames, and the queries are failing. Is there any way to tell the Windows

cname entry for DC?
W2k3 sp1 domain.
Can I make a cname entry for a DC without screwing up my entire DNS and
domain environment?
This involves cluster nodes that are geographically separated and the
creation of a 'File share witness'. The only server at the remote site
available to be the FSW is a DC and a DNS server.

Requirements for dns server
Hi,
If I took an older 800 megahertz machine and used it for my home domain
controller using windows 2003 server (or 2000 ) would it be too slow? I am a
one man operation here and I have 1 xp pro machine, 1 windows server 2003 64
bit and an xp 64 bit laptop. I am a developer and use the server for alot of
development testing and use the mainly use the net for surfing development
sites...

Active Directory Integrated - add second DNS server
Hi.
I have a simple W2K3 domain (domain.local) with only 1 AD Integrated DNS
Server. To add resilience, I want to add another DNS Server.
I'm happy installing the DNS service on another of my AD Controllers, but
have a few queries about the configuration.

Allow non-administrator to update Primary zone
Hi,
How do I let a non-administrator update a single Primary DNS zone? In this
case, adding the account to the DNS Admins group doesn't apply.
This is a Windows 2000 Server. It is part of our Active Directory domain,
but the zone in question is a standalone Primary, not AD-integrated. For
this reason, the method given in the DNS whitepaper at

DNS error on Netdiag
Hi;
I upgraded a file server to DC, that would be the 3rd dc in the network
(Dc-3). The plan is to remove the first domain DC-1 or to dcpromo it to
memeber server. The upgrade went fine, however when I do netdiag from the
upgraded file server (DC-3) I get DNS test...pass and [Warninig] The dns
entries for this dc cannot be verified right now on DNS server DC-2 IP

nslookup won't work
hi, all, i have to reinstall my 2 dc with same domain name, the i want to
rejoin existing member server with this bew domain(with same dns name), then
i disjoin to a workgroup and the reboot. after this i try to run nslookup to
verify connectivity and i receive dns time out?????? the i run ipconfig and
the primary dns is the active directory dns ip, but nothing...... if i try

Dynamic DNS Service
Hi,
I have a win2k advanced server on a static ip. I have 10-15 pc's on the
internet with dynamic ip's. Reading about the Dynamic DNS Service I don't
quite understand is this a feature by which I can find out the ip of the

Virtual hosting...
Hi, I'm hosting websites and I want to be able to create a bunch of small
websites that will run independently under one IP.
How can I point a domain, like "virtualsite.domain.com" to a directory
within a dedicated IP site?

Primary and Secondary vs. two primaries
I’m trying to harden our DNS servers. I currently have 2 servers (ns1 and
ns2). Ns1 is primary and ns2 is secondary. Neither are AD integrated.
I know that a secondary zone server only maintains a limited copy of the
zones and queries the primary for other information. So if the primary goes
down, it seems that the secondary is somewhat useless.

Move hosting to external site - DNS resolution not working
Hi Everyone,
We have decided to move our web hosting to a provider (vs. doing it
internally).
1) Everything is working fine outside our trusted network.
2) I changed the www entry for the domain to a (A) record pointing to the IP
provided by the ISP.
3) When I ping from out trusted network www.[domainname].com it responds

domain and subdomain on different servers
Hi,
I host many websites on Windows 2003 server. Sometimes I am in a
situation where I need to setup a subdomain that uses a 3rd party
software (such as a CMS application) that is installed on my Linux
box. Those two boxes are on totally different networks, and I want

Round Robin dns
Trying to configure round robin dns for a web site. Have the technote
Configuring Round Robin but not quite following it.
I have made three A records with the same name and different IP's and add
the dword reg key for Roundrobin set at 1. Tracerouting shows it simply goes
the first one in the list over and over.

where is this old server listed?
I'm looking at my DHCP Server settings from my XP Pro machine, so have to
Add Server, then tell it what server to add.
On the Add Server screen the second option is "This authorized DHCP server"
and in the list is my current DC server and my old DC that has been off for
line of a year or more.
This (at least for me) confirms that there is/are still references to the
old server at 192.1...

Inside DNS Issue
We have DNS setup for our current domain and I have all the proper
entries so users get to my mail server via the internal ip instead of
the outside ip.
For example:
ourdomain.com has entries for smtp.ourdomain.com as a mail exchanger
and a host record and they both go to my internal ip 192.168.x.x
Our mail domain name is changing and it will not be same as the name

DNS/AD/RPC issues
Starting last Sunday (day before memorial day), we started getting a
slew of critical errors in our logs, as well as lost functionality on
our domain:
We have three Domain Controllers at AD 2003 level. We also have two

Why is e-mail being rejected when sending to an external domain?
I have a user that is trying to send e-mail to another user in a different
domain; however, the message gets a bounce back. every time We are able to
send e-mail to most external domains except two or three (as of now). I'm
assuming this is some sort of DNS issue but I'm not sure where to start
looking. Can anyone assist me with this? I would be so grateful.

EventID 4521 after W3K2SP2
I am reposting htis question because I think it is getting ignored as a reply
to an existing thread.
I am seeing the DNS Event ID 4521 problem after installing W2K3SP2. A posted
solution is to change the "Load zone data on startup" from "from active

Workstation Causing DNS Problems
Hi,
I've noticed several event 53 errors on our DNS server relating to CertSvc
(below). Due to the error message ("DNS name does not exist") I looked at
our DNS, and found that the workstation is creating its own folder!? So we

2 Domains
We have an existing Server 2003 setup as a domain controller. We just
purchased a new Dell Server which will eventually replace the existing
