Can't retire old DNS server
Here's my situation (covers about 5 years):
1st - installed a Windows 2000 AD with DNS installed on W2K DC;
2nd - installed Windows 2003 DC with DNS - still mixed mode AD - AD
integrated ;
3rd - First DNS server starts to die, so we installed a new Windows 2003 DC
with DNS;
4th - removed DNS service from original Windows 2000 server;
5th - problems resulted. It seems that the A...

Clients not registering in AD integrated DNS
I have an issue where new clients, upon joining the domain, are not
registering in DNS. Further, they do not register in DNS at any point
thereafter.
My environment consists of 2 separate AD forests/domains (domA.com and
sub1.domB.com), each having their own AD integrated DNS (Dynamic updates =
Secure only). The DNS servers for domA.com have a domain specific Forwarder
record for su...

DNS round robin and Apache Server
Hi all !
We have a web application that is hosted on Apache HTTP server.
Now we decided to make the application more scalable so we'll replace
the single Apache server with a farm of 3 Apache Servers.
So now I need to load-balance the client requests between the 3
Apache Servers.
Is it enough if I configure DNS round-robin so that, given a domain
name, it will distribute the load bet...

Sub domain - Windows Server
Hi there,
I am not using a hosted server (Windows 2003), but my own server with
a static IP. I would like to have a subdomain that maps to a
particular directory. Could you please advise on how this could be
done?
My domain is registered with GoDaddy and I believe they support
subsomains... however, I believe this would work only if I hosted it
on their website...
Thanks!

Domain name - static IP mapping?
Hi,
I have a domain name and a static IP. Right now, I simply forward the
domain's requests to the IP.
However, this means that the address bar shows the IP AND NOT the
domain name.
I would like the user to see: http://www.mydomain.com/myfile.html
INSTEAD of
http://203.11.1.1/myfile.html.
My server is Windows Server 2003...
How do I do this?
Thanks!

Workstations Not Registering
Windows 2000 Server Small Business Edition (DNS is AD Integrated and only
secure updates are allowed): Moved everything from one physical location to
the next, reinstalled OS on server (SBE 2000), joined clients to domain.
Clients show up in ADUC within the Computers container, but not within the
forward lookup zone in DNS. The only host record to show up is of the DC
itself...Any ideas?...

dnscmd over ssh
Hi.
I'm using an ssh connection via cygwin sshd to a windows 2003 DNS
server. This is very useful for running dnscmd, however when using
dnscmd /recorddelete <zone name> <node name> <node type>
I get no output, where I should be getting an "are you sure" message.
The same occurs if I use nsoft's ssh server for windows powershell, or
indeed any shell via the cygwin s...

Zone Transfer between AD-I and non AD-I DNS
Hi,
Here is the scenario:
2 domains, A and B - A has AD-Integ DNS, B does not - both are in different
forests across a WAN link - people in B need resolution for names in A -
intent is to keep the traffic on the WAN link to a minimal level
Which option will work OR is best suited from a traffic perspective:
- Create a stub-zone in B for A's domain
- Conditional forwarding is setup in B...

Redundant servers for mail relay
Hello,
We have a variety of SMTP enabled apps that currently deliver mail via one
of our internal Exchange servers, lets call that machine "smtpgateway1".
If "smtpgateway1" fails we would like to be able to redirect these apps
with a minimum of effort to another Exchange server which we'll call
"smtpgateway2". Unfortunately these are simple apps and they do not
understand MX records...

ping ComputerName often fails
Hi,
I find that I often can't ping machines (%Computer%) in a different domain
than mine that are on the same VPN. However, I most often can ping their
FQDN (%Computer%.%UserDNSname%).
There is no trust relationship between the domains and the only thing in
common is they're on the same VPN and I use the same credentials (UserName,
password) to log on to either domain.
I have a s...

Need Help from DNS Expert on Subdomain DNS Records

Reverse zone - one zone or multiple zones ?
Hi. We are currently setting up a reverse lookup zone(s) on our Windows
2003 DC(s) which also hosts DNS. Our network contains mainly 2000, XP
clients with 2000 & 2003 servers Our network is of small-medium size with
5-10 subnets e.g. 205.1.1.x to 20.1.1.20.x/24
If possible could anyone advise whether we should create individual reverse
lookup zones for each subnet ie. 205.1.1.x, 205....

Removing one DNS server halts all internet resolution
I have an old (and dying) W2K server with DNS on it. I have two others
(W2003 server) also with DNS. They're AD integrated. The W2K server was the
first to come online several years ago.
Anyway, if I remove DNS from the old W2K server, internet name resolution
for the company stops - the other two DNS servers don't seem to know how to
pick up and carry the torch.
I'm missing something...

Append DNS suffixes (in order)
Hi,
We have a network which runs with windows 2003 AD server and a DNS
server. We have about 150 client PCs and they all run win XP.
Usually, whenever I setup a XP client, I manually append (enter) a
list of FQDNs as DNS suffixes (in order) to resolve some of the
addresses.
Is there any way that I can configure the existing DNS server to

FRS/DNS/RPC after joining 2003 Servers on 2000 domain
I added 2 new 2003 domain controllers to our domain, leaving 2 existing 2000

DC's (DC3) has been made an AD-Integrated DNS server, and the other (DC4) has
inherited the WINS and DHCP services as I moved them from one of the 2000
servers (DC2). DNS is also running on DC1 (also a 2000 server).

Windows DNS and Netware DNS
Hi.
We currrently have a Netware 6.5 domain but will be installing AD soon
to accomodate the move away from Groupwise and on to Exchange 2003.
Both Netware and AD will be running side by side as AD is being used
purely for Exchange.
At the present time, all workstations have the Netware DNS server
specified in their TCP settings. When we move over to exchange, they
will obviously need ...
