DNS forwarding question
I have a network 192.168.1.x with its own DNS servers which are setup with
forwarders to the ISP's DNS servers for non MYDOMAIN addresses. We have
just installed a line to a 172.100.100.x network which also has its own DNS
servers which are setup with forwarders to their ISP's DNS server for non
THEIRDOMAIN addresses.
We can ping and tracert back and forth fine, but we need to resolve ...

PTR record is not changing
Hi,
My mail server address is mail1.hizone.com, i was using ip 216.82.71.25 for
it. Now i have changed the ip to 216.82.71.176 for the same address. I have
created a ptr record for the same in reverse dns section in windows 2003. But
when i check the reverse dns record, mail1.hizone.com still refers to 216.82.
71.25 and not the new ip.
216.82.71.176 is also listed on spamcannibal.org fo...

Server 2003 DNS Scavenging
I have a Server 2003 Domain Controller, running DHCP and DNS and I am
trying to scavenge old PTR records and a few duplicate A records. My
question is if my DHCP lease is for 12 hours, do I still leave the
Scavenge settings to the default of 7 days for No Refresh, 7 days for
Refresh and 7 Days for scavenge (main Server setting - not for zone) I
get concerned due to the short lease duration for ip...

Internal/External name resolution issue
Hi,
Firstly the clients setup is:
SBS Server 2003

DHCP and DNS pointing to the IP of the SBS server
Gateway IP pointing to the IP of the gateway internet router.
The client is using Exchange with an additional SendAS POP3 setup that I
have setup for additional email domains (Just FYI) which requires the

Can a client in a DNS subdomain with no DC's join an AD domain where the DC's reside in the parent DNS domain
Lets say I have a DNS domain called company.local.* In that domain
resides my DNS servers for that domain and my Active Directory Domain
controllers, which creates an active directory domain called,
company.local.* The DNS servers are not necessarily running on the same
box as the DC's and may not be Microsoft DNS, but do support all of the
requirements for hosting an AD site.
Can I go into th...

Error 4515 - Duplicate zone information
Hi,
I am currently in the process of building up two new DC's to replace to
older DC's on our network. I have set them up on our network to replicate, GC
etc and they are quite happy.
Recently I added the DNS role to both of them. Our DNS is set up on all
servers as "All domain controllers in Active Directory Domain" for our
company.internal zone. And our _msdcs.company.internal zone...

iPhone DNS issue
I have a problem with the iPhone receiving my corporate email when I'm in my
office because of an issue with the active sync push feature.
I looked up on the Apple website and this is what they said:
"When roaming between home and office networks with Wi-Fi enabled, "push"
may stop working if your company's Exchange ActiveSync server has a
different IP address for intranet and Internet...

IP Address goes back to old address after TTL expires
I have changed the IP address on one of my member servers every 60 minutes it
reverts back to an old address that is in the wrong IP range. I have tried
manually adding it, taking it out, letting it register itself I have used
DHCP for that VLAN and still it reverts back. I have 2 DC's and they are the
only DNS machines in my network and no outside zone changes are allowed. I

DNS query to NS-record fails if one of the DNS is down
Hello,
we have 3 Domain Controllers in Windows 2008 which are also DNS
servers.
If I do a nslookup to "domain.com", the address of the 3 DNS server is
returned, which is logical. The problem is now that, if one of the DNS
servers or even two DNS servers fail, the nslookup to "domain.com"
does still return the 3 reference to the DNS servers(even the one that
are not there), since the NS-re...

Frustrating
Ok, here's our situation.
We run 2 DNS servers on our Win2003 AD network. We were hosting our website
internally, and recently moved our site to someone else. I work for the a
state agency, so our DNS is forwarded onto the main state DNS servers, and
each of my 2 DNS servers have 4 IP for forwarding DNS requests.
We had several cname records, www being one of them, that pointed to th...

However the server mail.domain.com is running in our network. It can be

Remove AD integrated DNS
I have been handed part of a project that involves removing DNS from AD and
transferring to BIND.
Current situation is:
Domain ad.domain.com which is authorative (forward & reverse) for a subnet.
It currently does zone tranfers for that subnet to the BIND DNS.
AD has one DNS server (Win 2K3 R2) which is also the domain controller.
The goal, at the moment, is to remove authority for t...

Slow Startup When Away From Domain After GP Software Install

We have a problem on a few of our laptops when they are out of the
office, away from the domain. In the office startup time for our
laptops (Dell Latitudes, D630s, D530s & D830s, 2Gb RAM, Win XP SP3) is
around 2mins 30seconds, not to bad. However, when out of the office,
such as working from home, or on a client site these laptops can take
up to 10 minutes to boot. Additionally, when o...

Fowarder failover
I can't seem to find any information from MS about how many servers in a

In O'Reilly DNS on Windows Server 2003 it says 6 servers can be configured.
There is no limit on how many servers can actually be entered in the list.
However when I have tested failing over DNS Server only seems to attempt the
first 3 forwarders in the list ...

DNS Server in 2008 not resolving some domains
Hi,
We have an SBS server running Windows Server 2008 DNS, using the root
hints to find the relevant domains.
We are finding that particularly some domains such as www.google.co.uk
are not resolving correctly with the DNS server, giving a server
failed response. When you clear the DNS cache everything is ok again.
Initially we thought the firewall may be blocking EDNS0 responses, but
