DNS/AD configuration design questions
I hope someone can steer me in the right direction.
How would the best way be to setup the DNS for my new infrastructure design?
It was suggested by a friend that since "ourdomain.com" is our TLD, that
location 1 could be "internal.ourdomain.com" and location 2 could be
"external.ourdomain.com".
However I have two concerns:
1. The Exchange server will make everyone's default email addr...

DNS Migration from Novell to WIN2K3 R2 Active Directory
Hello,
We currently have an NT Domain that we need to migrate to Active
Directory. We also have a Novell environment which hosts the DNS for the
organizationand a few File shares. I am quite comfortable with the NT to
WIN2K3 migration of the user accounts and groups but I need help with the
migration of the DNS environment from Novell to AD. I have looked at MSDSS
but there was no e...

3 DNS servers - much confusion
I guess I'm looking for a link to a document that can help me straighten out
my DNS situation?
I've had a multitude of problems with my DNS servers. The original was
demoted and removed. The "spare" never worked right. Now I'm trying to get
these in order along with another in a remote subnet (same domain). I don't
know how to tell which, if any, is the primary. I also don't know h...

Delete Stale DNS Records
About 2 weeks ago I Enabled DNS Scavenging on one of my Domain Controllers
and have the "No-Refresh Interval" and "Refresh Interval" set to 4 day's,
which is half of my DHCP lease of 8 days. In addition, I set the Zone
aging/scavenging settings on my Forward Lookup Zone with the same settings I
mentioned above. After checking my DNS records I didn't see a large
reduction and still see ...

Scavenging or something else to cleanup duplicate DNS entries?
We have 2 Windows 2003 DNS servers and one Windows 2003 DHCP server on
our domain.
There are 3 different subnets in DHCP.
Most servers, all printers and some random Windows workstations that
fail to accept DHCP reservations have manually entered static IP
address.
Every other Windows machine (XP or Windows Server) is on DHCP with or
without reservations.
Scavenging is not enabled and w...

Where is the DNS cache?
I am trying to solve a svchost.exe problem where the DNS Client service
claims 98-100% of my CPU as soon as I open the connection to my ISP
(dial-up). As a result, Windows hangs for quite awhile. I know the DNS
Client service is the culprit because I can watch its behavior in Anvir Task
Manager under Processes.
Since MS Automatic Update Service is a known svchost problem source, I have...

NonSecure Updates
We have secure update turned on. The DHCP servers are in a different forest
and do not have any permissions in our forest, at least as far as DNS is
concerned.
Normally, if a DHCP server tries to either create or update a record the
request is denied. However, sometimes, when a DHCP server tries to create or
update a record it is successful. I believe this behaviour just started. I ...

Keeping internal users from getting routed to external web IP

they're fine, and authentication works as expected.
I'm also publishing this externally, so I have a public record for

are prompted to log in. All fine and good. (Although t...

DNS Stale Record Scavageing and DHCP Reservations
I have a DHCP server that sets the lease to 31 days and also has several
reservations as well as dynamic updates to DNS. This morning I discovered
that some of the reservations had had their A records removed from DNS via
the DNS scavenge for stale records feature, effectively hiding the devices
from the network (they still worked via IP, but name resolution failed).
