DNS re-assigning address
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Our DNS server is getting an entry overwritten about every 30 minutes.
DNS appears to be grabbing a dynamic address for a static IP'd
machine. What makes this more frustrating is that it's our Terminal
Server that it's happening to, and only this machine.
Thanks,
Morgan...

what are member domains of a Forest
One group has setup an internal Forest with 2 member domains, which
I'm not familiar with the concept of member domains. They have
main.local forest with 1stmember.local and 2ndmember.local domains.
Are these seperate Forests?
When I do a nslookup -type=ns 2ndmember.local, I see that all the name
servers for the 3 domains are listed. However when I query each name
server the only name se...

Cannot ping Active Directory Domain Name
Hi
I am trying to establish a trust from a WAN domain to a domain on a LAN.
Network connectivity is established and confirmed.
The problem I am experiencing is that I cannot ping the domain name from the
domain on the WAN. I have configured forwarders on the WAN DNS and can ping
individual servers on the LAN domain, but not the domain name itself.
Eg. I can ping server1.contoso....

Stale records
We have many 2003 Domain Controller with AD integrated DNS.
The Microsoft DNS is a dynamic DNS in the sense that records are added and
deleted automatically by the clients or by DHCP; our problem is that the
records deleting doesn’t work very well and a counsaltant told us that it is
a Microsoft’s DNS bug.
We have setup the scaneging at 8 days but we have many records (hundreds)

Microsoft DNS configuration
Hello,
I have an external DNS server that is authoritative for my customer's
domains. One of my customers was told by their credit card company (or
gateway or merchant, not sure which) that they needed to go through
security testing as part of the new PCI security standard. A scan by a
security company revealed some DNS issues. Below is the description of
the problems regarding DNS:

Name resolution issues with VPN
Scenario: I have a domain using DFS with a domain-based root, so
clients access folder shares using \\domain.com\share-name.
Domain.com is also registered externally (internet).
When on my internal subnet my internal DNS servers resolve domain.com
and all is well. But when I fire up a VPN client and get a new set of
DNS servers I'm guessing they are picking up the external view of

How to control access/changes in DNS server?
Hi, we are in need to prevent access to DNS servers to only three "dns
administrators". The DNS servers are also domain controllers, running of
Windows 2000 servers. DNS zones are active directory integrated. We need to
prevent users from accessing DNS servers using DNS MMC either from dns server
it self and from local workstations.
Current security settings on DNS server (DNS MMC/server ...

what order uninstall ADI DNS and demote DC
Conflicting answers when googling. On a DC with AD Integrated DNS that I want
to demote, do I demote DC first then uninstall DNS, or do I uninstall DNS
then demote DC. All fsmo roles have been moved to among 2 other DCs, thse 2
DCs are also running AD Integrated DNS, and the server is no longer a gc or
pointing to self for DNS.
It's the AD Integration factor I am concerned about. I wan...

DNS setting in child domain?
Hi All,
we have a forest with a domain and 2 child domains.
There are 2 domain controllers per domain, and all of them host DNS, which
has forward lookup zone for the forest domain, and is AD intergrated on all
DNS servers, replicated in the whole forest.
Now, for one of the child domains there are only 2 records (for the 2 domain
controllers), but not for other machines?

Failback to primary DNS-Server?
Hello!
I'd like to ask you, if there is a failback-mechanism in the DNS-client
service to use the primary DNS-server again. For example, I use 10.0.0.1
as primary DNS-server and 10.0.0.2 as secondary DNS-server. 10.0.0.1 is
offline when a client tries to resolve a record. Let's say, that
10.0.0.2 is able to resolve that record. Later, the 10.0.0.1 is back
online, but the client (Windo...

updated. Fine.
