tv tuner card
mary 12/29/2008 10:50:01 AM
Hi Everyone. I hope everyone had a safe and nice Christmas. I have Windows
Xp Media Center 2005 and a Hauppauge WinTv-HVR-1250 PCIe card installed, I
brought the card thinking that I could receive the extended basic
channels(100+) that Comast Cable has to offer.
Unfortunately it does not. It only receives digital channels up to 99. My
setup is --cable from the wall--dvr--tv tuner card. When I try to setup my
tv signal in WMC(WMC recognizes my stb remote) it scans the system, It scans
channel 2. My tv stays on channel 4 and the DVR changes the channels. That
is whre my problem lies. the WMC remote will not change the channels inside
WMC, but will change the channels on the STB. I am at a loss. Can some
please give me advice on how to solve this problem. I have searched many
forums for the answer and have not found one. Any assistance will be
appreciated.

The lower cable channels (up to approx 99) are analog channels, those can be
tuned directly by an analog tuner within MC. Higher channels are generally
digital channels (many are scrambled) and can only be received through the
STB and then funneled to MC through a composite/s-video/coax connections.
The standard MC can only receive over-the-air (OTA) digital channels when
you use a digital tuner card. You can have two cards in you system -- one
receiving the analog channels and one receiving the OTA digital stations and
MC will merge programming into one guide so you can use both channels.

Some digital cable channels are sent in an unencrypted format (Clear QAM)
and some tuner cards can receive these additional channels and come with
there own software to tune and view the channels, however currently MC does
not have this capability Vista may be updated to include this option, but it
is doubtful that XP would be updated to support Clear QAM.

Currently the only option to receive the digital channels directly (no STB),
is to purchase a new Vista cable ready system that would have a cable card
tuner. These tuner have a slot for a card from your cable provider that
replaces the function of the STB.

To receive the signal from your STB if it is set to output on analog channel
4 and is connected to your tuner card using a coax connection you have to
tune your MC to analog channel 4 then you will be seeing the channels being
tuned to on the STB.
