Hey gang,
I am about fed up with AVG8 Free. I guess hard to complain about a free program, but it just keeps getting annoying. I keep getting the red exclamation point on the avg icon in the tray, I open it up and the update manager failed. Last time I went through this, I ended up uninstalling and then reinstalling the program - now it is doing it again. I am having trouble now even manually updating it.
So I figure - if I am going to have to uninstall again, I might as well consider a different AV program.
Any recommendations on a good AV program for Vista 64 bit Ultimate? I guess free would be nice, but I would not mind paying a little for a decent program.
Thanks for any feedback here,
-- Don

I've been using Avast Free since early XP64 days with no problems.

Yep I think Avast is certainly one of the better ones

Yes, me too! And the pro-version was no more than around 40 bucks the last time I looked!
About the update, though - could it be the firewall? AVG has a pretty good name here as well, I believe.

Thanks Tony, John and philo, ,sounds like Avast may be worth my checking it out.
I don't think it is the firewall, I can usually manually update - this evening, it took me trying several times off and on before it finally went through and udpated. That automatic update thing just keeps getting screwed up I guess, keeps giving error that it can't connect to the server. Then eventually my trying it manually gets it done.
I will give Avast a try and see if it does better for me. I always had good luck with AVG until this most recent version 8.

With Avast, my machine never slows down and the update process takes place in the background. There is simply a notification when the update has completed

The automatic update gives me an error stating that it can't connect but when I check the date of the last update, the update has been downloaded and installed so, I just ignore the message.

Hi, I like my AVAST too, very like the others, since it was one of the first, that supported x64.
I guess, you use the free version. The licence has a lifetime of 1 year (if i am rihgt).
Take a moment, download the latest version from AVAST, AND register again for a "new" 1 year (still cost free) license.
I would recommend to you to thank for the cost free usage in the comment field.

I have the 32-bit version of AVG Free Edition installed on XP Home SP3 but I disabled the notification of error state for the Update Manager. My notification area icon only shows an exclamation mark when I have disabled the (memory) Resident Shield. You have to go into the advanced settings area to disable the error state notifications. I check for updates manually at least twice a day usually. I have done the same thing for the Link Scanner since I am using McAfee Site Advisor toolbar/BHO instead. I plan to stick with AVG at least until I replace this old HP Pavilion desktop.

The AVG Free program and their company web site are coninuously under attack by malware authors. I've noticed this over the last several months and most of my clients that bring in infected systems have been running it. I guess when you are free, popular and effective, it makes you a big target.
Avast, on the other hand, has a much better self defense engine, updates regularly and works really well. It also has no where near the overhead that AVG has.
My main recommendation to customers is Avast teamed up with Spybot S&D's TeaTimer. Most of my clients are home users and a lot have older systems. If the compination is too much overhead for their system, Avast alone covers very well.
I also use Avast for serious infection removal in a system that I have set up solely for that purpose. I can be working on other systems and the infection alarm will get my attention anywhere in my shop.

Hey gang,
Ok I got AVG uninstalled and installed Avast. So far I think I like it.
Quick question for you Avast users - I see there is a Virus Recovery Database generator icon in the systray, the options for it are generate when computer is idle, generate only when screen save is on, generate now, or disable that feature. I have read and believe I understand what that is for, basically gives you a shot to maybe restore a file that might get damaged by a virus. I guess my thinking is I should just disable it - seems like with good AV protection and safe computing, probably won't get a virus anyway, I got a virus once and that was many years ago when I was a rookie computer user.
What do you folks that use Avast set this feature to?
Thanks for any tips,
-- Don

Hi Don,
Personally, I just ignore it. I've never bothered creating the VRDB and have never had an issue. Then again, I don't get infected anyway ;)

Personally, I've set mine to regenerate while idle, not knowing exactly what it's good for - after that I've forgotten all about it. Under Avast Settings, though, I have checked to update the virus database automatically, and the program only after I allow it - plus, I have checked under 'Troubleshooting' the option to not display any 'Dialogs' and interrupting active full-screen applications. This lets you play games and watch Video's quite undisturbed.

The data base allows for actual repair of infected files. Without the data base, repair is not usually possible and you only have the option of deleting or putting it in the chest, which is really pointless unles you have the database. It could mean the difference between recovery and "Erase and Reload".
Like Jane C, I used to say "I don't get Viruses" and it held true for 24 years.
I got hit with a drive-by version of AV 2009 on Download.com week before last while checking repairs on a customer's system. It hit and was on QUICK. No matter how quick your response time is, you can't grab the Ethernet cable fast enough to stop it. It embarassed me more than anything else, and cost me about 2 hours of labor getting rid of it. I am no longer cocky my ability to avoid viruses.

Thanks, for explaining this, Keith - is there an easy way to understand the differences between the configuration options?
Or, should we have been reeding the on-site FAQ? I'll probably do that anyway, but informed intro's never hurts.

Probably reading the FAQ is the best way to understand. I haven't realloy had time to read them all. After I got hit was the first time that I got serious about reading them and really looking at the different options. I just don't seem to get the time to go throught them all, though.
That and playing with the settings. I think that the default settings are problay close to what is needed.
By default, the VRDB is never more than three weeks old, if I remember right. On the station that I use for Virus removal, I select the "Generate Now" at least once a week due to it's repeated exposure to infected drives.
But one of the coolest things about Avast is that you really don't need to understand the configuration settings for it to work.
The thing to understand is to make sure that you re-register once the subscription starts to run out (it's free to re-register, too). The only systems that I've seen with Avast that became infectected were the ones where the client got the warning, didn't re-rergister because they thought they would have to spend money, then had to spend over twice the money for me to get their system back. It would have been cheaper for them to buy the Pro version.

I couldn't agree more, and I am pretty much in the same boat - the thought of taking the time to read through a FAQ is usually infinitely worse than actually reading them. What immediately had me hooked to Avast (nearly four years ago, and under recommendations from this here group) is the apparent 'weightlessness', it's like it wasn't even there. But it is, I have a pair of posters in a mail-list who's contributions are flagged with a 'suspicious white-space character' message, but there is nothing wrong with those posts as far as I can determine, it's probably a software incompatibillity - perhaps they are on Linux? Or something.
