OK, I have OneCare on my "main computer" and I'm getting read to install on
my 2nd and 3rd "backup computers".
On those, I have McAfee installed. I read in a help file online that before
installing OneCare, it's important to uninstall any other security software-
which makes sense.
The OneCare I did install, I downloaded- so I don't have it on CD or DVD.
What I'm concerned about is that- I seem to recall that I didn't have an
option to first download OneCare then install it- is that the case, or is it
just that I didn't notice that option? (or maybe I'm just getting confused
with McAfee's web site when I downloaded their program- it couldn't be save
to disk- it had to be directly installed- which I was unable to successfully
do- which is why I'm using OneCare)
I'd rather keep the McAfee on the other computers and download OneCare
before installing it -since I don't like to be online with no protection-
even if it's to go to a MS web site to download OneCare- though I will if I
have to.
And, I think, but I'm not sure, that I simply do the download, then activate
it with my MS Live (or whatever it's called) email address (the passport.com
thing) and my password. The MS site will remember how many times I download
and activate?

One Care is a "live" installation and can't be downloaded. You must
uninstall McAfee first but in doing so you will be protected by the Windows
Firewall which will be enabled when McAfee is uninstalled.
You are correct regarding activation on the second computer. One Care tracks
how many computers are active on your subscription. There doesn't seem to be
a limit to how many times you can uninstall and reinstall on the same
computer.

How does OneCare or any other such installation routine know which computer
a program is being installed on? I recall that a few years ago MS developed
some software that could read the label on your CPU chip- to identify the
computer- is that the trick?

PS: I'm finding that these newsgroups are a quicker way to get some answers
compared to go to the OneCare web site's discussion boards. I always liked
the Usenet and seldom like web based discussion forums.

That is probably true. But if you don't uninstall you'll hit a limit and
land in a real mes :-)
