Second HDD As Backup
Snowee <guest[ at ]unknown-email.com> 12/13/2008 7:37:34 PM
I plan on moving all of my data onto my second HDD so that when I do a reinstall my data will be untouched, is this possible? Or will Vista reformat it and I'll have to reinitialize it, etc. -- Snowee

Vista will leave the second drive untouched. Go ahead and move all of your
data to it..

Moving your data to a second hard drive is an excellent way of backing up
your data. When you come to re-install Vista the second drive will remain
untouched and will not be formatted, unless you decide to manually format it
yourself, of course.

Moving your data to a second hard drive doesn't back up anything. Make
sure to back up anything you value as you always should do, preferably to an
external source.

Rather strange statement - "Moving your data to a second hard drive
doesn't back up anything"

Barnes was puffing up his purist chest and - albeit in a less than
effective way - was emphasizing that backing up to anything other than
external media isn't really backing up.

He is, of course, fulla crap - PURIST crap.

If you move something the original is deleted. You still have only ONE copy
of the file. You do NOT have an emergency backup.

Agreed with above, moving deletes original files.
What you should do in my opinion is make a second partition on the boot
drive and give it a volume name like data.
Then move all your data to the new partition.
Now you should run regular backups from your Data partition to your second
hard disk, which should be an external drive.
This means an O/S re-install will not disturb your data and you also have it
backed up.

Graham.....

And your planet is? As explained by Richard Urban, MOVING deletes the
original file entry leaving only one copy which violates the definition of
backup. Computer Science. A copy of a program or file that is
stored separately from the original.
