Help, please... SVCHOST.EXE is hogging all the CPU cycles. 246mark[ at ]gmail.com 12/12/2008 7:51:41 PM On an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop, with Win XP SP3... It runs EXTREMELY slow. I got it up in Safe Mode, and still... Win Task Manager tell me that there's a process called SVCHOST.EXE from the UserName of "Network Service" that's constantly using 75 to 85% of the CPU... with no applications running at all. I tried restoring to an earlier configuration... couldn't do it. I tried "Right-click" to set that process to a lower priority... it wouldn't let me. Any clues? Ideas for a solution? Do not install anything offered by "The Real Truth MVP". He is not "real anything", not an MVP, plagiarizes "his" software, and installing his programs will prevent you from reaching legitimate antispyware/tech support websites. You need to find out what is using Svchost.exe. (This will provide some of the detailed info you may need) Next expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded. (You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the Svchost.exe you selected) Note: some Svchost entries may need to be expanded to show the detail (sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left of the entry. For further information about Process Explorer see here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx Right click on Properties and select the Services tab. You can stop any service by placing the cursor on a service in the List and clicking on Stop. In the list you should find wuauserv (Automatic Update). This service has caused excessive CPU usage on many computers. It is a good place to check first. Once you have identified the service post again for further help. -- Hope this helps.
