Deleting unnecessary files
"Kickin' Ass & Takin' Names" <PopUlist349[ at ]hotmail.com> 11/30/2008 1:54:48 PM
Several months ago I replaced Norton (by Symantec) with McAfee.

I went to Start > Control Panel > Add or remove programs and removed
Norton and Symantec applications.

Yesterday while cleaning up temporary files, I discovered that my hard
drive has several folders with Symantec files. As best I can tell, my
computer is still loading Symantec's automatic update when it boots (I
removed the Symantec auto update from my msconfig file).

When I try to delete the Symantec folders and files, the sytem tells
me that "File XXXXX is in use" and will not delete that file or
folder.

How do I get rid of these old Symantec folders and files?

When I do Start > Control Panel > Add or remove programs I do not see
any Symantec applications and I really don't understand what these
files are doing here after I removed Norton and Symantec.

Thanks.

Symantec (Norton) products are notoriously difficult to remove. Symantec's
latest removal tool does a good job, however. Download and run it.

Don't worry about the part where the webpage asks you to pick your old
Norton product. That's only to take you to the reinstallation instructions,
which you don't want to do anyway. If you see your old product, choose it
and then you can download the tool. If you aren't sure what you had, pick
something close.

IF Malke's instructions don't seem to help you might try running unlocker
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ which is free program to unlock files in
use.

Thanks to all for your assistance.

I used the Symantec uninstaller that you recommended and it did the
trick.
