"not repsonding" applications
"Fran" <spamsucks[ at ]alltimes.com> 11/8/2008 11:15:39 PM
Using IE7 & XP. For reasons unknown to me I have been getting frequent
hanging of web pages when working in IE7. This has only been in recent
weeks. This seems to happen when click on a website link. I do not work
with more than 2-4 windows open at one time. So, when one window hangs
(hourglass appears and stays on), I use contol/alt/delete to open Windows
Task Manager and "end" the non-responding application(s). Then all windows
close down. Is there something(s) that I can do to fix this problem? All
help is appreciated. Thank you in advance. Fran

Try clearing all the Temporary Internet Files and Temp folders. The free
utility ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) can make this easy and thorough; be
aware that it will usually also and by default clear things like saved
passwords for web sites.

Look for the "other builds" link and take the "slim" build, as it doesn't
have the Yahoo toolbar you don't need.

In addition, watch the hard drive activity light when you experience
delays. If it flickers or stays on a lot your computer may be making
heavy use of the swap/page file, a symptom you could need more memory.
Use CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring up the Windows Task Manager and poat to
this thread again with the PF Useage and Total Physical Memory values
from the Performance tab.

Also report back whether you:

You installed new software or upgraded existing software

You installed or replaced any peripherals

You started visiting a new web site or the appearance of one of the
sites you visit changed.

Not long ago I installed Skype. I wonder if Skype is the culprit and if
there is a fix for this? Thanks, Fran

Uninstall any and all Toolbars that you might have installed. Also uninstall
Google Updater, if installed through Add/Remove Programs.
