For some time now I have been having difficulty in accessing the CD drive on my laptop and the DVD drive on my desktop computer.
It started at about the same time, and i suspect that it was caused by one of the Windows XP automatic updates, but it is far too late to go back using system restore.
On the laptop, when I've recorded material on a CD, and want to make it compatible with other drives, the computer reboots. The material is on the CD, and it can be read on other drives, and it's just the nuisance of waiting for the reboot, which takes about 15-20 minutes each time, and is annoying if I have a lot of material to back up on CD.
On the desktop computer it often reboots when I try to read files on the drive, or copy files to the drive, especially using Windows. If I'm using a DOS program and want to write a backup to a DVD-RW disc, it works without problems. But if I want to copy files to the drive, it reboots.
In every case when it reboots it reports that there has been a "serious error" which is reported to Microsoft, but Microsoft never seem to get round to fixing the bug.
