External HD Icon

I have an external HD connected via a USB port. It works OK, but in Explorer
the icon is one of those "unknown" things. How do I get a regular icon?

Create an autorun.inf in Notepad and put it in the root of the
external HD. Put an icon file (*.ico) in the drive and point the
autorun.inf to that icon, e.g. this is one from my external HD:

----------autorun.inf below here
[autorun]
ICON=AUTORUN\WDLOGO.ICO

Thanks. I couldn't find an icon that looked like a hard drive, but used
another icon. BTW, I note that your autorun file was for FreeAgent. That's
exactly what I'm using, but couldn't find any FreeAgent icon.

Can I ask another favor? I have an icon file that previously showed the
icons when I viewed at "List". Now they have the "unknown" icon unless I
change the view to "Thumbnail". When I select one and look at Properties, it
gives a file type as "NeroPhotoSnapViewer.Files9.icon" (I recently upgraded
to Nero 9). What should I do to get the proper file type?

No, my autorun file was not for FreeAgent (whatever that may be).

No, my autorun file was not for FreeAgent as I don't have such a
program nor do I see how you came to that conclusion.

There are many thousands of hardware icons out there.
Do a Google search for "hardwareicons" or "hardware icons"
If you get a proper icon, that should solve your second question.
