Don,
Thanks for your help:
1) The search Icon I was referring to is the magnifying glass Icon that appears in one of the toolbars in a Windows explorer (not I.E) folder window. The magnifing glass Icon that appears in the start menu works just fine and opens the search companion that I am used to.
2)I do have Google Search Toolbars installed in both my browsers (IE & Firefox) but there is no Google toolbar listed in my "Add/Remove Programs". Google Search Toolbar is not listed as an add on in IE but it is in firefox.
3) I did install Windows desktop search but have since uninstalled it. It seemed to have still provided the correct search companion even when it was installed if I remember correctly. The Search companion that shows up now has a white background and aside from saying "search the web" and "Brought to you by" it has a Microsoft 20008 copyright
