Exactly right : XP doesn't have some of the features that enable browsing shared "network" libraries but Vista does : http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/sharing.mspx#q20:1

You could quite reasonably use windows file sharing, right click on your music folders and choose Share.... on Vista
Then in XP you should be able to add those as monitored folders (assuming no username/password needed) so those would need to be Public shared folders, which are a special category.
