Power outage-now XP Home wants a password
distraction3345 <distraction3345.3l3u3b[ at ]DoNotSpam.com> 12/28/2008 12:50:25 AM
We have Windows XP. Normally there is only one user, and a password is not required. However, we had a power outage and suddenly at the welcome screen XP wants a password for the user, and of course there is no password.

We tried logging on in safe mode, selected administrator and selected ok with no password, and got an error message that it couldn't log on to the "specified domain" and to contact the system administrator. If we pick the user, it asks for a password.

Apparently this happened once before to the previous owner of the computer (family member) and the technician used some file or program on a USB key and "bypassed" the password...any idea what that file or program could be?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated! -- distraction3345 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ distraction3345's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/distraction3345.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-security/1094101.htm http://forums.techarena.in

A power outage doesn't add password protection or join you to a domain.
On the other hand, 'password not required' means one less barrier for
malware to overcome.
