I use this HD in NAS enclosure as a STORAGE for our home computers (2x XP Pro, one Vista and one MAC). it was attached thru USB to a Linksys WRT350N router, also set for FTP, got slow latelly from all reading-writing (pictures, movies, programs and games backups and so on), no other way but re-connected last night to one PC (XP Pro) to defragment, to get some time untill buy one more HD, needed more space anyway, morning only 1% was done, not sure what it did overnight, so I stopped the defragmenter !!! and load the check disk, after several minutes came back, not moving at all, than I disconnect the USB and shut down both the HD and the PC when I boot next first time, the PC can see the drive, recognise the model (probably reading the HD firmware), but data corrupted, no more folder list at all (probably it was reading the beginning of the disc at the moment when I shut it down!) the HD lost the file system, no NTFS anymore.. is there any DIY type of utility program what might help recover things from that drive? taking it to the Pro's is not an option, $$ not the best latelly. thanks

I have used GetDataBack with good results, but it is not free - $79 for the NTFS version. Not sure if that counts as $$ to you!

==================== Try running chkdsk /r on the drive
You could try Testdisk on the drive to recover data

1.) chkdsk /r not helping 2.) PC Inspector file recovery NG 3.) Seagate-Maxtor SeeTools for DOS or Windows NG 4.) Maxtor support page and their tech support not responding!!!??? well, hard to believe I will contribute to their sale in the future?! 5.) TestDisk_win is doing something but I am not at their level, their tech support guy recommend me to try GetDataBack after all of these trials could cost me a lot to buy all of these softwares, problem: - lost the file system new problem: - my younger boy's notebook Vista won't boot ?! question: - ANYBODY AWARE OF ANY RECENT VIRUS WHAT COULD EAT THE NTFS-VISTA FILE SYSTEM? becouse my Norton 360 didn't catch anything yet...

With regard to your Maxtor - you can download and try GetDataBack for free to see if it will find your files. You only have to pay if you want to save the files it finds, so if it doesn't work you won't have paid out for nothing.
Not aware of any recent Virus in particular - but a lot of existing viruses will effectively break your hard disk by rewriting the boot sector. If it was me I wouldn't rely on Norton 360 - it is not one of the better anti-virus packages IMHO and even AVG free will find more and offer better protection than Norton does.
