I've got a 3GHz P4 dual core CPU and 512MB RAM, running on Windows XP Home. Some might say the RAM is too less, but it has been doing its job for 2-3 years now, not a single problem related to that. I don't have any spyware or viruses on my computer and I have enough free space. I have a completely legitimate version of Windows XP with all the latest updates.
First off, wmiprvse.exe is constantly stealing 10-30% of my CPU capacity - NOT OK MICROSOFT!!!!!!!!
While I started typing this thread the CPU topped 100% for half a minute until I suspended the service of wmiprvse.exe. Windows Media Player 11 played some simple music which at the moment consumed 15% CPU power, wmiprvse.exe took 10-30% as usual and iexplore.exe consumed the rest of my CPU resources.
When I visit websites which has some flash or javascripts content, the CPU usage levels up, especially if I browse in 2-5 windows at the same time. I never experienced this problem with Internet Explorer 7 before. This **** started 1-2 months ago, and same goes with the wmiprvse.exe issue.
I don't know what you're up to at Microsoft... but lately, some of your basic Windows components - wmiprvse.exe, wmplayer.exe and iexplore.exe has been performing absolutely horrendous. I feel very frustrated about it, to say the least, because it is my working space!!
I work in the media business where everyone praises Mac, but I've always been a defender of the PC and Microsoft Windows (I also bought a SonyEricsson Xperia with Windows Mobile instead of iPhone, just as a principal). But right now it feels like you, Microsoft, spit me right in the face for making such malupdated components to your operative system Windows XP.
As I stated before, no spyware, all legit components, unacceptable peaks of CPU usage... never was like this 2-3 months ago! I demand an explanation!

Rant all that you like if it makes you feel better... but this isn't a site that is officially monitored for suggestions/complaints by MS.
It's a P2P site.

Have you installed the SP3 update as this incorporates a Hotfix for the problem with Wmiprvse.exe?

Hope this helps.

In response to the first two posts, I thought this forum was affiliated with Microsoft since the address on my screen says ....microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default... but apparently not then, sorry.
Thanks for your answer Gerry. I'm not sure which hotfix you're talking about. I've spend hours browsing through google and the MS site, with no luck.
The only thing I see some people refering to, is this hotfix: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0638D919-109B-41C6-851D-0BE19D29172E&displaylang=en
That hotfix is 1½ years old and is only for SMS 2003 ..and I'm using WinXP SP3! If there's any real hotfix for Windows XP that deals with the troublemaker wmiprvse.exe, I'd be more than glad to recieve that!
Thanks! /Erik

Hi Erik!

If repairing the WMI doesn't help... http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm ....then use a temporary solution... hogkillerservice.blogspot.com ....that will kill the wmiprvse.exe if it gets too hungry.
I have the same problem on my laptop which was getting very hot when wmiprvse hog activated, and fearing that it will overheat, I wrote the abovementioned small service. Works for me, and in the meantime I try to find a real cause and solution.
Regards, Chris
