I'm thinking of going from Windows XP to a new Vista 64-bit box. Is there any easy way to determine which of my applications might have trouble on a 64-bit OS other then checking the vendors one-by-one?

Hi, Brian.
A couple of years ago, application compatibility was a problem. But there are very few applications that will not run as well on 64-bit as on 32-bit. If you mention which ones worry you, someone here can probably assure you. As we beta-tested Vista, I ran both the x86 and x64 versions. At first, a few apps gave me problems (Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4.0, for one; Nero (version 6?) for another). But by the time Vista "went Gold" in November 2006, those were running fine. No other app has given me a problem since then.
The only ones that should bother you now are those that use a 16-bit loader, but those are rare nowadays.

Thanks for the information and reassurance. The programs that I'm most concerned about are: - Dreamweaver MX 2004 - Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 - Roxio Creator 9 Home - OmniPage 16 - Photoshop Elements 3 - Quicken 2008
Everything else is fairly unimportant or I already know it works.
Thanks Brian

Hi, Brian.
I can confirm that Quicken 2008 is running just fine on Vista Ultimate x64. I'm not certain of Photoshop Elements 3, but PSE 4 and 6 work well in Vista x64. (I skipped PSE 5 and haven't yet tried PSE 7.)
I don't know about the others you mentioned. Others here should know about them.

I am trying to remember, but if I recall the only problem with Roxio Creator 9 was the backup program would not install on the 64-bit version. Everything else, I believe was okay. (I'm now using 10)

Another thing to be careful of is anything that comes with device
drivers. Owners of Sony eReaders only just recently got an officially
x64-compatible version of the eLibrary software (within the last week).
The issue was the device drivers that the installation package tried to
install - they were 32-bit. Since the device driver install failed, the
whole install failed and you had to use a work-around to use eLibrary
(and every time a mandatory update came out).
I have also had issues with the topo-map software that came with my
Garmin hand-held GPS and the utility that you use to update the on-board
maps on Garmin's automotive GPSs. In the case of the topo-map software,
I was able to load it under an XP virtual machine running under VPC 2007
under Vista x64. In the case of the loader utility, I had to use an old
XP machine.
