Trying to install vista on new pc

I have just purchased a new pc - HP Compaq dx2400. (HP support is useless) On my first startup xp is installed. I have a disc from HP to install Vista which I did but once installed Vista asks me for a user name and password to log in. IT'S NEW! and I havent got a username and password and i wasn't asked to create one during the install. I then restored and went back to xp which does not ask me for a username or password but want Vista! Can anyone help please? -- loopyloo71

Today all machines come with Vista...
and XP is by special order only.

Since you went to the special trouble of getting an XP machine...
which presumably works fine...
Why do you now want to change it to Vista...what do you hope to gain?

Anyway...the problem you are experiencing is NOT a Vista problem per se...
It is a function of the specific OEM version of Vista you have.

No matter how bad tech support is from HP...
you will need to call them to solve the problem.
To save yourself some time...insist on speaking to a supervisor...
I am sure they will know what user name and P/W to use

I purchased a Vista machine. They told me it was downgradeable to xp. I confirmed I wanted Vista then this happens. Wanted a Vista Pc the same as my one at work. No instuctions came with it, just a few cd's. Just to anxious to get it sorted instead of waiting for HP who only support in office hours. Guess I will just have to wait. -- loopyloo71

Ok...
I guess it came already downgraded...
they should have at least given you what you ordered!

Anyway, to get the right answer you will probably have to deal with their
tech support.

You should have been able to enter your own user name and password.

Maybe you can use the HP help function built into your HP version of Vista
to find out how to upgrade the system you downgraded from Vista to XP back
to Vista. Or possibly how to use the Use the recovery partition to complete
recover your system to the way it was when delivered.

Thank you for all the help. I am now staying with XP! I have since found out from several others that so many people request a xp downgrade that many machines are now supplied with it as my machine was. -- loopyloo71

Well so far XP seems to be holding out pretty well...
I've never had a problem with it yet!

Nor have I with Vista, installed on a machine that used to run XP.
It's so good that I finally shut down the dual-boot with XP and am
using the former XP drive to store all my music and audio files.

Vista has been rock-solid on my HP system since it was pruchase almost two
years ago. You've got XP running on yours. If it works for you then stick
with it, no need to go through the hassle of an "upgrade" to Vista
