Is this possible with my specs? As far as my research has shown, I
should be fine. The only problem is that I can't seem to find an upgrade
directly from Xp Pro to Vista Ultimate x64. Am i just going to have to
fork out the dough for the retail original install version?
I plan to turn this system into a media center with an extender down in
my living room.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
You didn't give your specs so it's impossible to give you an answer. In
general, you will want a high end processor and to be using more than 4GB of
installed memory for this to even begin to be effective.
There is no upgrade path to x64, they are clean install only, so yes you
would need a full retail package.
Does your XP Pro system not do something that Vista Ultimate will? If so,
then consider the upgrade, otherwise it may be better to leave things as is.
You may find difficulty in locating 64-bit drivers for some of your
hardware, especially so with tv tuners and such.

XP Pro handles media players quite well.

Actually, my specs are listed in the drop down menu titled "My System
Specs" at the lower left corner of my post. You just click the arrow and
it will drop down.
Also, media players? I want to get an extender and put it down stairs
so I can use my pc as a dvr, an avi, wmv, etc player. The research I
have done so far says nothing about XP pro handling extenders. It's
strictly a Media Center function. Vista Premium and Ultimate or Windows
XP Media Center Edition 2005 are the only OS that have WMC on them
correct?
If Xp Pro will handle extenders, can you give me a link to an article
that explains this or direction on how I can set it up?

No they are not, your are posting from a web based forum which is actually
linked to Microsoft's news server, most of us here use a news reader
application such as Outlook Express or Windows Mail to access them, we've
never even been to the forum your posting from.

Hi Leezus and welcome to the vista forums :party:
Specs look fine ;) although you may want to up the RAM to 4GB, after
you complete the install
also I would check out the manufacturers sites for your hardware and
download and create a CD/DVD with the latest drivers before you start,
including any specialist raid drivers you may need.
I would also advise a fresh install rather than an upgrade, You can
set-up a dual boot if you still need to keep your XP Pro for
compatibility.
Upgrade disk should not be a problem ...

If he's going from a 32-bit to a 64-bit OS, he doesn't have any choice.
It has to be a clean install.

This is of course true, I was referring more to the type of disk,
Upgrade or Full, than the actual install process, sorry for the
confusion. to clarify in these circumstances it should be possible to
upgrade an XP professional x86 or x64 to Vista Ultimate x64 using an
Upgrade disk, although a fresh install would be required

Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up buying Vista Ultimate Full
Retail. Not an upgrade disc or anything. My CPU and MOBO support 64-bit
OS so once I get it and install it the only thing left to do will be
upgrade my ram to 4G.
I'm pretty excited :D I've heard Vista's a resource hog but if you
dedicate memory to it , it can really outperform XP. I hope that's truth
and not myth.
