My machine runs slow in regular mode and fast in safe mode
Jackkat 12/4/2008 7:29:02 PM
When I click on anything , other than an access icon to the internet, my
machine goes into a stall, wnywhere from 1 to 3 mintues before it moves on;
even when I click START. Surfing the internet is normal. It is only when I
try an access some application on my machine, it seems to slow down.

If I go out into the internet it runs normal. If I boot in safe mode, it
runs normal. If I click on the Norton icon, it open the Norton window in
normal time.

I have disabled the startup and non-microsoft services in msconfig and
restarted but it is still slow.

I use Norton Internet Security 2008. I have run a full system scan - no
viruses or spyware noted.

It all seemed to start when I tried to update windows media 10 which didn't
work. I then went to Mircrosoft updates and tried to update WMP 11 which
didn't update and came wback with a vague general access denied error code of
80070005.

I am logged in as an Administrator. Its my home machine.

I uninstalled WMP and tried again with the same results. Did notice that
even though it didn't install, I do have about 5.2 MB of something in the
window that displays programs that you want to remove or change and its
called Windows Media Player 11.

Any thoughts,

John K.

Did you try a System Restore to a point before you tried to update
winmedia 10?

Yes I tried a system am restore after trying to update WMP 11 a couple of
times. By then it was too late and it said it couldn't restore. I should have
tried it after WMP 10 didn't work. Didn't think there would be that much
trouble with the media player update. Lesson learned on that one.

If it runs fast(er) in safe mode you might want to even get autoruns.exe
from MS. A bit more than msconfig. You might find some offending
program with it.

Thanks - I'll give that a try

Without question the problem is NIS 2008. Remove it and install decent
security that is not the colossal resource hog that NIS is and you will see
immediate improvement. Make certain you do a search for how to remove Norton
Internet Security 2008 as it doesn't come out all that cleanly.
