I notice the option for Newsgroups in WLM. What Newsgroups is it referring and where do I find them?
Also, I subscribe to 32 feed accounts through the IE browser. These feeds are automatically added to WLM where, for me, they are easier and quicker to read. I noticed that where in IE feeds remain on a server until accessed, in WLM they appear to be downloaded and stored on my computer. Not only are they listed within WLM but also a copy of everything is in the WLM folder. In some cases, I must delete each feed after it is read. Can anything be done to rectify this situation?
Thank you.

Hi, Nissi1.
"A rose by any other name..." ;^}
Your post reminds me that we each use WLM in different ways. I use newsgroups constantly and don't use Feeds at all. Also, you are accessing these message in the browser interface, which I can't stand to use. In the browser, these newsgroups are called Microsoft Communities, or discussion groups.
Your message - and this one of mine - are actually posts to a Usenet newsgroup, hosted on the Microsoft public news server. We can read and write messages here by using either the web-based interface in IE or another browser, as you are doing, or by using a newsreader, such as WLM, as I am doing. We see the same messages either way, but they appear differently in the different programs.
Click here: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop
That one click should (unless blocked by something like a corporate firewall) start WLM, if it isn't already running; create a News Account for the MS server; connect you to this newsgroup; download the 300 newest posts; and display the latest one in its Reading Pane. You should be able to find both your post and mine.
After reading a few posts, explore the many ways that WLM's newsreader interface can be customized to make it fit the way YOU want to use it. Start by clicking the Menus icon and then Show menu bar. The Tools | Options... menu is where most of these customizations can be made. Click Newsgroups and subscribe to any of the 2,000+ groups in the list of those available on the MS public server.

What a concise and well-written explanation, R. C. Thanks.

Thank you R.C. and hello again,
Well at least the server is fixed since I am able to view your response.
The information you provided is extremely helpful. This is my first newsgroup.
Is there an option to have WLM feeds remain on the server until they are downloaded. Having each feed account with all their posts downloaded in WLM and again in WLM store folders takes up unnecessary space.
I have also subscribed to feeds using the Google Reader which I access when I use Firefox. Within the Google Reader all feeds are stored on a server until accessed.
Thank you.

NNTP is not "feeds". The posts are called, "articles", and are retained on the NNTP server for the duration of the retention period configured for that server (for 'msnews.microsoft.com' that period appears to be 60 days for the busier groups; other servers may be longer, or shorter). Articles are aged off the server at the end of the retention period, but most clients allow you to purge articles sooner than the server retention period. TTBOMK, Windows Live Mail only downloads headers, then downloads the article body as you read it. Unread articles are not downloaded, thus don't take up more space than required for the headers.
> I have also subscribed to feeds using the Google Reader which I access when > I use Firefox. Within the Google Reader all feeds are stored on a server > until accessed.
Accessing news groups with a browser is not the same as accessing them with a client, such as Windows Live Mail. Usenet, accessed via NNTP, is more like (but not the same as!) email via POP3, or IMAP4. You set up a server name in Windows Live Mail (I use 'msnews.microsoft.com' for the Microsoft Help groups, and 'news.sf.sbcglobal.net' for most everything else; though I am evaluating 'news.motzarella.org' for some groups). WLM then downloads article headers, and you decide which ones look interesting, and click to read.
Some servers, such as 'msnews.microsoft.com', do not require a login. Others, such as 'news.sf.sbcglobal.net' and 'news.motzarella.org', do require a login.

RC, Great explanation...
Fyi...on occasion we've noticed that if the msnews.microsoft.com server is not present in WLM or if another server is present and set as the default, the direct link to a newsgroup may not work in WLM, other times is does exactly as intended..sets up the news server account and loads the newsgroup for reading and a prompt to subscribe on exit.

Hi, Winston.
As I recall, some (all?) versions of OE/WM/WLM have created the msnews.microsoft.com News Account automatically when they are installed. That account is usually called "Microsoft Public Newsgroups", but sometimes is called "Microsoft Communities", even in the newsreader. I wouldn't bet on that recollection, though.
I usually post that one-click suggestion to users who are having trouble finding answers to their questions in Communities, but it seemed appropriate for most everyone this morning as a way to get around the malfunctioning servers - at least temporarily, and many users who try it might like it and continue to use the newsreader rather than the web-based interface.
Another workaround that I didn't think of until tonight is that a user might check to see if one or more of the MS public NGs is "slurped" by his own ISP or other news server. While such relays sometimes result in messages that are lost, delayed or out of sequence, many of them work quite dependably. I don't know whether they could work during this morning's outage.

Hello,
I used the link provided to set up a news service account. This newsgroup appeared but when I tried to reply to your post, I was asked to setup the account. When the wizard opened it requested an NNTP server name. I was also directed to contact my ISP provider for information. Will you please provide me with further instructions on how to setup this newgroup in WLM? I am unable to go any further.
Thank you,
Nissi1

One more thing. The setup wizard requested an email address and it suggested Name[ at ]microsoft.com. Would this be the correct email to use? Or would the addressed in this post <Nissi1[ at ]discussions.microsoft.com> be correct?

R.C.
IE is changing how successful this may be. For example, since that link is never clickable in the web interface I usually (used to) suggest that my reader copy and paste it into the IE Address bar and press Enter there.
But it doesn't work there any more (at least in IE8 under XPsp3.) So lately I have been suggesting that people can copy and paste in the Run... dialog instead. Even then I had a Vista user saying that that didn't work either. IIRC, suspecting a problem with filetype, I requested that they could copy the results of this command pipeline
ftype | find /I "news"
(e.g. as entered in a cmd window) but (naturally) there was no follow up reply. ; )
Anyway to complete the idea, even if the user can't *click* on such a news link, they should at least be able to construct the full command line for the open action and enter that in their Run... input box.
For example, mine are all currently configured to be opened by OE.
<cmd_output OS="XPsp3"> E:\>ftype | find /i "news" Microsoft Internet News Message="F:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /nws:%1 news="F:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1" nntp="F:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1" snews="F:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsurl:"%1" </cmd_output>
Nevertheless, by taking the path from the New Message item and guessing that WLMail still uses the /newsurl: switch I can try your "click" suggestion by Run... (Win-R)
<Run_input> "F:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /newsurl:news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop </Run_input>
(I'm tagging that long line in case it gets chopped by my news reader.)
This isn't a fair test of your complete idea because I already have a subscription which matches that server name and newsgroup combination but it is a proof that the link doesn't need to be clicked and doesn't even have to treated as a URL by the OS. We can just make the OS open the program and then tell the program what we want it to do using its command-line switch. ; )
FYI

Use the second one, with the "discussions" in the domain name field.

Thank you everyone. It took me a little time to straighten things out but I am on my way.
R.C. your explanation was extremely helpful. I did not understand everything at once but as I began to setup the newsgroup and reread your explanation, the fog began to lift and things became clearer.
Winston thank you for the News Server's name. I was stuck there for a time.
N. Miller thank you for the information on email address, although I noticed I did not follow your advice. I will change it once I learn how to do so.
The information within this thread is important, is there a Favorite feature within this newsgroup that I can save these posts or must I use IE's favorite. Also I checked Google for other information to add to my newly created Newsgroup, i.e. news, but unless I am missing something, I could not find anything.
Again, thank you all for your assistance.

I responded to someone in the community using my newly setup newsgroup in WLM. When the response did not appear, I checked my sent emails. Sure enough, the response was sent to the individual's personal email with my personal email as the sender.
I know everyone is busy with other questions. Whenever you get the time, since this is not a dire emergency, will someone give me further assistance with properly setting up the newsgroup?
Thanks again and Happy New Year.
