hi there,
i just bought a new Hard drive as im running out of space on my current
hard drive. what i want to do is use my new HDD as the main one and
reinstall vista on it, an then use my current as an extra slave drive
for storage.
so my qusetion is (sorry if its a bit noobish) but if i reinstall the
same copy of vista on the new HDD its not going to lock me out or
somthing similer so i end up having to buy a new copy is it ?

Why reinstall.
just get some cloning software (such as Acronis)
then clone the old drive to the new one

Not a fan of cloning software, i'd rather save some pennys and do a
reinstall and thats what i did. So if anyone else is looking to do what
i did, the answer is yes you can :)

Why spend valuable free time installing all your aps /customizations
etc, Philo gave you the best answer, cloning is the way to go.
If you are that Ikey and don't care to purchase software take a
look at Bootit NG, cost $0.00 and isn't that difficult to learn,
Google it.

the question i asked was can i do a reinstall without vista locking me
out. not whats the best way to do it

I happen to like doing a reinstall every now and then anyway. it keeps
the pc clean and is a good time to work out what programs you really use
and It doesn't take long to install vista and while its installing i can
do other things, then come back, set the updates going and go do
somthing else and so on.
But hey to each his own i suppose.

Yes. BUT... set both disks up the way you want (master/slave) and
check in the BIOS to make sure they are both working and that the new
one is set as the boot drive.
Then DISCONNECT the old disk before you install Vista on the new one.
Once the install is complete and working (after a reboot), shut down,
connect the slave, and once again check the BIOS to make sure the new
drive is first in the boot order.

I've found something to be very true, Roberto: The "best" answer is
the one the customer wants to hear.
His answer is "NO, Microsoft will NOT 'lock' you out". NOt just
because he wanted to hear it, but because it truly is the "best"
answer in his situation.
Why should the customer buy new software to do something he can do
himself with no additional software (and cost).
BTW, using the "free" 30 day trial period for BootITNG to reinstall
his software is not very nice, now, is it? AFter all, Terabyte is in
the business to make money, not give its product away each time
someone has a little problem.
Also, last I looked, BootITNG is NOT "Free", as you wrote. It is
neither open source, nor is it a give-away. Its price is about 40
bucks, I think, not "$0.00"
While it's well-worth that $40, if everyone thought like you, Terabyte
would never make much money selling their excellent product. And it's
not necessary to reinstall one's OS.
BTW, PLEASE define "Ikey".
I remember President Eisenhour. HE was an excellent President, under
the circumstances, and not worthy of being called "cheap", as I think
you are saying.

Actually, Iain, the answer is "NO, Microsoft won't 'lock' you out",
since replacing a hard drive does not negate your existing license.
However, you will be "locked out" (of a sort) if you don't activate
your OS within 30 days. Make sure you uncheck "Activate via the
Internet" when first installing, or you will only get THREE days to
activate your OS.

Cloning may be quicker but its sounds to me like he needs a complete
re-install to clear out all the accumalated junk that builds up over time.
Go for it and do a complete re-install, what`s to loose, and hopefully your
fresh o/s will be better for it.

Maybe buy some imaging software later for regular backups.
