wireless encoding stream?
"_adrian" <test[ at ]test.com> 12/11/2008 9:24:43 PM
I need to find a solution that will allow me to wirelessly connect to the
net to send out the encoded stream FROM the server running the Encoder.
Anyone have a clue what my options might be?

It's no different. As long as the firewall/router is configured correctly
it will work, wired or wireless. If you have no control over the router
(i.e. public network) then you can only do a push to a server.

Thanks Chris, I guess my question was really one of whether there is a
cellular carrier that would be a good option for the net connection, or
what.. if I'm in the middle of a field somewhere, what would be a good
enough net connection method that I could stream across with some
reliability?

The encoder sends stream content using HTTP protocol, that is to say
it's reliable insofar as HTTP requires retransmit of missing packets.

So the question of course if "what bitrate do you need to send" based
on your expected playback experience ? If you need to display 350kbps,
then your upstream bandwidth needs to be 350kbps. That's a matter of
checking your GRPS contract to see what's guaranteed to be available.

Bear in mind the encoder doesn't provide a fallback mechanism to send
lower bitrate if the retransmit threshold of HTTP is exceeded.

Probably it'd error out, so like any live broadcast you need to
predetermine the *actual* upload bitrate that's reliable on the day.

Perhaps you only need audio ? Say 24kbps ? Or you need QVGA (176x144)
video resolution - then 56-64kbps should be plenty with modern WMV
codecs. 120-160kbps isn't a bad compromise for content which doesn't
move too fast (say birdwatching video ?)

Lets just say your expectations should not include 720p HD 25fps video
"from the field" via a mobile phone ?

Thanks Neil, yes all of this is familiar to me. I guess I'm asking if anyone
out there has done this via cellular? Sattelite? Any other type of wireless
connection? Where they successful? What would they recommend?

I guy from New Zealand in the WMTalk mailing list does Satellite links
fairly regularly for live events. You can check the list archives of
WMTalk and see what else people are using or sign up to the list to ask
questions.
