Suddenly need a password to connect
me[ at ]me.net 12/24/2008 4:33:33 PM
Bit of a newbie so sorry if this is unclear.
Both my desktop and laptop are running XP pro. The desktop is set up as
Administrator and I don't need to log in (I'm the only one using it). I have
just one shared folder on this pc. I have set up both the desktop and laptop
with fixed IP addresses and they connect through my wireless router network.
I've also set up my printer on the desktop as a network printer.
Until recently I was always able to use the laptop and access the shared folder
and print to the printer. Suddenly it now comes up with a window asking me for a
user name and password. I found by trial and error that for some reason my
username and password for my hotmail account is the one it wants.
Can anyone explain this and how I can disable the request for a username and
password?

Jeff

Is it possible that you recently turned off Simple File Sharing on
one/both of your computers?

Double-click any folder to bring up an explorer window, then
Tools->Folder Options->View (Tab)
At the bottom is a "Use Simple File Sharing" check-box.

HTH,
John

John, you were correct - Simple File Sharing was unchecked but I checked it and
still have the same problem.

Perhaps the guest account is disabled. Try bringing up a command
prompt window and enter the command:

> net user guest /active:yes

Also check to be sure windows file sharing is enabled.

John
