IR Hardware Not Detected
James Egan <jegan472[ at ]comcast.net> 12/29/2008 4:19:50 AM
When attempting to configure WMC on a new HP Pavillion with a Comcast set
top box, I keep getting a "IR Hardware Not Detected" error, and cannot
complete the installation. I spoke with HP support, and they want to to a
"recovery", which will ensure the drivers are not corrupted. I'm not so
sure. In the hardware device manager, I performed a driver update for
consumer IR devices, and it completed saying that the driver was the most
recent. So, I ran the HP update program which updates HP specific
drivers, and it did not update anything related to the IR port. However
considering the error message, It does sound like a driver issue.

The documentation shows what is referred to as an "IR Blaster", which
needs to be connected to a USB port. HP says that the internal IR port
in the front of the PC has replaced the external device, which makes
sense.

I've read several posts on this issue, and still do not have a solution.
I'm supposed to call back UP when I backup all of my important files.
Good grief. I searched the MS knowledge base for this error, and got no
results. Any ideas how to fix this?

-Thanks

HP support is wrong without an IR blaster connected so that you can control
the STB you will get the error you are.

You still need the IR emitter that should have come with your PC. It needs
to be plugged into an IR output jack on the PC (assuming this is built-in
hardware on the HP) and stuck to the front of your STB.

The PC did come with an IR emitter. The instructions says to attach one
end over the IR window of the cable box. The other end gets plugged into
the PC with a 1/8" jack. Other than that, the PC has an integrated IR
port on the front of it. With the IR emitter in place, we still get the
"IR Hardware Not Detected" error.

Now the documentation that came with the PC shows an additional piece of
hardware which we did not receive, and is not listed on the packing list.
That is a "remote control sensor", which appears to be about the size of a
pack of cigarettes. The above mentioned IR emitter above connects to
this, and then a USB cable goes from the remote control sensor to the PC.
But as I said, we don't have the control sensor. According to HP tech
support which is nominal at best, the built in IR port replaces this
external unit. Yet it still doesn't work.

Just got this working -- My wife had the IR emitter plugged into the "IR
in" on the PC. Should have been "IR out". An understandable mistake!
