System will not boot into windows completely
eastcoasttech 12/30/2008 3:41:03 PM
I was following the steps in : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188 :

I was seeing how to change the drive letter on my primary drive. I went
through the steps to the letter. I made a good backup of my registry just in
case. OK, here is the story:

In Regedit.exe.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

Find the drive letter you want to change to (new). Look for "\DosDevices\C:".
Right-click \DosDevices\C:, and then click Rename.

I changed the drive letter from C to E

Restarted the computer.

Now, the system goes through the splash screen and just sits at a blue
screen with the windows xp logo on it.

The system posts fine.

I tried the fixmbr through the system disk and still nothing.

Any ideas? Thanks.

What was the purpose of changing the system drive letter?

The original install defaulted to H, C was givin to one of my SD slots on a
media bay.

If your original installation defaulted to drive H: then you must leave it
on drive H:. The registry contains countless references to drive H:, and
changing the drive letter the way you did will cripple the system.

Thats why I only used the publication put out by MS. Apparently I am a
statistic.

Got it fixed. All data in tact.

I ran a repair....sorry, I left that out earlier.

No, you're not a statistic. The link you used states explicitly that you
must NOT use this method to change the system drive letter. Here it is:

Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article to change
a drive on a computer where the drive letter has not changed. If you do so,
you may not be able to start your operating system. Follow the procedure
that is described in this article only to recover from a drive letter
change, not to change an existing computer drive to something else.

What does it mean when it says "where the drive letter has not changed."
Thats the only reason I used the article. I figured that since it was used by
default, then it had not changed.

The article refers to situations where Windows was installed on drive C:
(for example) and the system drive letter has for some reason become E:.
This happens frequently when using third-party products to manipulate disks
or partitions. The method shown in the KB article allows the user to restore
the original drive letter. The warning says "Do not use the procedure [..]
to change a drive on a computer where the drive letter has not changed."
Your drive letter had not changed, therefore you should not have used the
method.
