computer won't go into standby mode
roadrelics 12/16/2008 5:54:01 PM
My cnewer compute with XP would go into standby mode just fine then all of a
sudden, nothing, it will not go into standby mode after trying every
concievable power confiuration, screen saver off, on & all different power
configs.....monitor, on-off-----hard disks, on-off.....system standby,
on.......sytem hibernate , on-off............ I tried the solution below
suggested by Nepatsfan & still nothing.....any help would be appreciated &
thanks in advance...Darryl --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, go to Start -> Run and enter regedit.exe in the Open box. Click OK.
In the Registry Editor, click on the + signs in the left hand pane to
navigate
to the following location.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies

Under this registry key you should see 6 subkeys numbered 0 through 5. These
represent the default power schemes that come with XP. Any subkeys numbered
6 or
more represent power schemes created by the user. If you find any numbered 6
or
more, right click on each one and select Delete from the menu. In the end
you
should only have the subkeys numbered 0 to 5 remaining under the
PowerPolicies
registry key.

Do the same for this registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls
Folder\PowerCfg\PowerPolicies

If it turns out that this doesn't help with your problem, download and run
this
registry fix.

Line 204, right hand column, Restore Power Schemes/Configurations

Good luck

Um, on your hard drive? ;-)

"the folder $hf_mig$ in the windows folder"

ie C:\Windows\$hf_mig$

If you can't see it at first, play around with Tools > Folder Options >
View, "Display the contents of system folders" and "Show hidden files and
folders".

& if its not there where
> would i get one of these ($hf_mig$ ) folders

Dunno, but you wouldn't just download it - not sure where "thehman" was
going with this, but the folder will have been there and shouldn't have been
deleted: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824994

Re: computer won't go into standby mode
roadrelics 12/17/2008 2:59:21 PM
Thanks for the help, and please excuse my computer ignorance......I have 2
computers with xp & i found the folder {$hf_mig$} on my older computer where
the standby mode never works....I could not find the folder {$hf_mig$} on my
newer computer where standby was working & now will only work spontaneously,
if i adjust the power settings...........This problem is very odd as i will
look at the different power setting options one time & there will be 6
different options---Home/Office---Portable/Laptop----etc. etc.etc., i will
adjust the power settings n Minimal power management to, everthing
off except the system standby & i set that to 2 minutes...it still will not
go into standby mode..... .....Then periodacly when i check i will only
have 2 options to set my power options {Home/Office---Portable/Laptop-}.then
thenext timei check all 6 option will be there.....this is very frustrating &
i haveno idea what is going on.......

It may be the next time i look & i will only have power settings
----Home/Office---Portable/Laptop----...this happens periododacally
