Hi Patty,
Your command prompt needs to be elevated. Click start and type CMD, then right click the entry that appears in the menu and choose 'run as administrator'. Click continue at the UAC prompt, then run "sfc /scannow" from this prompt.

Written for XP and other NT versions of Windows, the steps also apply to Vista (which is also based on the NT model). Where it mentions using the command prompt, use the steps listed above to elevate the prompt or the commands will fail with error messages similar to what you are already seeing.
