What happens when you download and install the WinXP-specific audio drivers, as provided by your sound card's or computer's manufacturer? Hint: They'll be on the drivers disk(s) that came with either the computer, the motherboard, or the audio controller (if purchased separately), or on support web site of the manufacturer of the computer, the motherboard, or the audio controller, which ever applies.
