Creating GPT RAID volume
Hagop 11/7/2008 6:59:01 PM
I have created a RAID array according to the controller's instructions. I'm
having difficulty getting Windows XP x64 Pro to initialize it.

In Disk Management, I see the disk. It reads:

Disk 5
Unknown
2794.53 GB
Not initialized

When I right-click and select "Initialize Disk," I get one of two outcomes.

1) Sometimes the partition is split into two, the first being 2048.00 GB
(Unallocated) and the second 746.53 GB (Unallocated.) I can then create a new
volume in the first (2048.00 GB) partition, but it never finishes
initializing (the hourglass never ends.) I quit and restart Disk Management.
I go to format the partition and get an error message that reads, "The
operation was canceled due to an internal error."

2) Sometimes I get an error that reads, "The operation did not complete.
Check the System Event Log for more information on the error." When I look in
the System Event Log, I see that no error has been logged.

Regardless, I am unable to initialize my 2794.53 GB GPT volume.

Questions:
1) Does Windows XP x64 Pro support GPT volumes with Opteron processors?
2) Are there instructions for how to get my RAID array to work in Windows XP
x64 Pro?
3) Am I missing something relevant?

How are you trying to use the GPT disk? Win x64 does
support GPT disks, but you cannot boot from a GPT disk - it
cannot be your system disk.

I am not using it as my system disk. I have a dedicated single drive for that
function. I am successfully booting to that disk. This is a data drive.

I have never tried setting up a RAID with GPT disks, but I
would think the controller wouldn't really care how the
disks are formated.

Re: Creating GPT RAID volume

The problem isn't the controller. The controller recognizes four the 931 GB
drives and creates the 2,793 GB RAID array. Windows boots and sees the
2,794.53 GB array. The problem is that Windows can't initialize an MFS volume
greater than 2,048 GB, so I have to use GPT. Unfortunately, I can't find
instructions on how to do this, or what to do if things go wrong. As far as I
can tell, I'm doing what I should, but Windows isn't cooperating.

Have you used Goggle to look for information on GPT RAID?
If not, then you should do that. There is lots of
information out there, but I have no idea what may help you
and what won't. Google gave 168,000 possibilities for RAID GPT.

Yes, Bobby. I tried Google. I'm not an idiot. Apparently you feel that I need
to read that you "have no idea what may help you and what won't." Rest
assured, I really don't need to know that you have no idea what may help me
and what won't. I'm trying to get my message out to people who may actually
have a clue as to what may help me and what won't.

If you can suggest something more useful than, "Try Google," please post a
reply. Otherwise, move on to the next thread. Thanks.

When you choose "Initialise Disk", Windows should ask you how you'd like
the disk initialised. Your choices should be between GPT and MBR.

I've posted a link to an article about using GPT disks to your other
thread on this problem.

You can convert a disk from
MBR to GPT (or vice versa) only before a disk has been partitioned for the
first
time (or after all partitions have been removed).

Hello,
Correct,
so the first step in disk management is to right-click on the drive and
choose to convert to GPT.
Then attempt to create the partition.
Thanks,
