Are you saying that MC install fine and is fully functional otherwise? Because, you comment that Internet Explorer didn't install would indicate there were other problem with the install. The 3rd disc is nothing that would really matter to MCE, in theory, you should be able to just let the MS Update run to get all the same stuff that is on the 3rd disc. Many oem copies of XP MCE only some with 2 discs.
Typically when you get a bad install it's because of either a wrong type of Product Key being used or running through the setup in the wrong order. The install must be a clean, fresh install and you should start with Disc 1, you will then be asked for the second disc, then you will be asked for XP SP2 - you must use the 1st disc again at this point. Do not use a separate copy of SP2 or a separate XP Pro w/SP2, that will muck up the install.
If all of the above is successful, you should be able to run MCE without using the updates on the 3rd disc (you need to eventual install them for certain features and compatibility, however). -- James Orlando (Goofy says "Hey"), Florida
