Drivers for HP Expresscard Digital/Analog TV Tuner and Compatibility with Vista MC
"rak" <rakess[ at ]charter.net> 12/23/2008 1:47:35 AM
I'm running Vista 32 Home Premium on a laptop. It came with an HP
438587-001 tuner. Best I can tell, its either a Hauppauge HVR-1500 or 1600
equivalent. I also believe there is an HP driver update that will bring it
up to clear QAM standards. Problem is the driver update is listed for an HP
438587-002. HP says it should work, but I'd like to make sure. I've also
asked Hauppauge, but no clear answer yet.

So I have two questions. 1) Does anyone have any familiarity with these
tuners and know if an 001 will accept an 002 driver. 2) Hauppauges' site is
confusing as to whether or not media center will work with their QAM drivers
or not. So even if I update the driver successfully, does anyone know if it
will work with Vista MC in HD (1080i) mode?

Thanks for the help.

Currently Media Center does not support the reception of QAM signals, you
have to use a differnet program like the one provided by Hauppaugue to be
able to use the QAM functionality. You can install and use drivers with the
QAM functionity without causing any problem problems with Media Center, its
how my computer is setup at home.

If you have downloaded the drivers from Hauppague and open the zip file, One
of the executables in the zip file will identify the type of Hauppague care
you have installed (I think it is HWClear.exe but not 100% sure). Read the
suuport FAQ at Hauupauge, and it should tell you have to positively identify
what you have so you can install the correct drivers.

Thanks for the response Bill. I'll proceed as you suggest. You may or may
not know the answer, but I'm wondering (since I have a Hauppauge tuner
supplied by HP for use with MC) if I will be able to download the WinTV
application or just the drivers. Bet I have to buy it.

I am not Bill, but you should have no trouble downloading WinTV and Drivers
from Hauppage.

They are a little hard to find.

Here is WinTV 6. Click the Download Tab. Then find the support page for your
card.

To close this one out, Hauppauge says this is "an ATSC, NTSC tuner for Media
Center only." In other words, they are telling me it will not work with
WinTV v6. (Not sure whether to believe that one or not.) Unless anyone has
a good idea, I guess I'll be in the market for another tuner.

I suspect that the card is a standard HVR 1500 and you can download what you
require from:

The link was provided, how hard would it be to try?

Seems like the simple way to find out.
