XP won't read data cd burned on Vista
MLAC19 10/29/2008 4:51:04 PM
I burned some documents and word processing files onto a cd using Windows
Vista. The burn was good as I was able to call up the files from the cd
drive. I then tried to access the files on a computer running XP. The disc
read as completely blank, showing all 700MB or so as free space. I went back
to my Vista computer and burned the content onto a new cd using Nero
software instead of the bundled Vista program. That disc is not being
recognized by the XP system either. I really need access to these files from
the computers running XP! Please help!

Are you CD R or RW discs? Many RW disks written on one computer can not be
read on another computer with a different brand of CD drive.
I have not had any problems with CD-R disks between XP and Vista systems.
Can you read a CD written on the XP machine on the Vista machine?

Try also, if readable on different Vista and XP machines....

I have the same problem. I have a DVD that was burnt using VISTA. It works
on other computers with vista and in my dvd player. Yet it will not work in
either of my computers with XP. I have tried the DVD in several of my
friends players and it also doesn't work if they have XP.

I went online thinking that OF COURSE microsoft would know of this problem
and have a fix for it, but so far I haven't found anything useful. The only
thing I find is this threat copied onto several other websites. It's so
frustrating!

XP needs a decoder.
Such as http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html.

Use mastered instead of live format.

Re: XP won't read data cd burned on Vista
"Curious" <mailmenot[ at ]nomail.com> 11/23/2008 7:13:19 PM
A DVD decoder such as the one you referenced is used to play DVDs or TV
programs recorded in MPEG2 compressed format. It is not required for data
files.

Maybe you used the Live File System format...
the Mastered format would be been the better
choice.

I know what you said but a DVD Decoder such as the NVIDIA DVD decoder is
not an example of what you seem to know is required and the link you
supplied is no longer active since Nvidia no longer sells it and when they
did the also stated that it should not be used with Vista since it was
designed and implemented only for MCE 2005.
I suggest that you respond to this with a recommended product and active
link to a product that does support "Mastered format instead of Live format"
so that readers of this thread know what will work instead of being led
astray.

Hi *MLAC19;873847* I don't know if you are still following this post or not. I can't believe what is taking place here where are the moderators?
I thought the problem you mentioned was fixed with sp1, but I guess not.
I was having the same problem as you. Data burned on Vista, just would not show up on a computer with XP. I downloaded a program called "burnaware" the free edition and tried making Data DVD's with it ( including multisession) and then drove over to a friend's house with XP and I could see the Data and multisession.
I have not tried this with Nero, I will have to in the near future.
There is another way to accomplish what you want and that would be to buy a flash drive and copy Data to that to read on the XP os.
There is also a Program called "isobuster" that will Extract the files from the cd's. You only need the free version of this program to extract data from CD's or DVDs. Let us know how you make out. -- dbknox

Do your XP PCs have DVD readers? Sounds like they only have CD-ROM drives.

Jim
Re: XP won't read data cd burned on Vista
"JW" <JW[ at ]nospam.nspam> 11/24/2008 6:30:17 PM
Apparently both MLAC19 and Moonstasz have a recent version Live File System
method of formatting DVDs that is not compatible with the version of the
Live File
System that is currently on the XP systems.

In this situation they need to use the Mastered method of formatting their
DVDs using the VISTA DVD Maker since the Mastered method is far more
compatible with other(if not all) DVD players. As suggested by Sackboy.

The following is a partial quote I got from Microsoft Help after Using Vista
help and searching on "Format Vista DVD" If you use MS help yourself you
will find a lot more information concerning DVD formatting and material
about the different versions of the Live File System option on different
releases Windows.
"
Format a CD or DVD
Before you can copy files to a CD or DVD, the disc must first be prepared
using a process called formatting. There are several ways to format a CD or
DVD disc. Your choice of format determines which computers and other devices
will be able to read the disc.
Insert a disc into your computer's CD or DVD drive.
In the dialog box that appears, click Burn files to disc.
In the Burn a disc dialog box, type a name for your new disc.
Click Show formatting options, and then click one of the following
formatting options:

Live File System
Mastered

Click Next to prepare the disc.
Now you can copy files to your disc using whichever method you selected.
Choosing the right formatting option for the job
When you format a CD or DVD, you can choose either the Live File System or
Mastered format. Use the following information to help you determine which
formatting option you should choose.

Live File System discs:
Enable you to copy files immediately to disc by dragging them.
Are convenient if you want to keep a disc in the burn drive and occasionally
copy a few files at a time.
Are convenient because there is no lengthy recording step, such as with
Mastered discs. Each file is written to the disc as you drag it to the disc
folder.
"

Apparently Curious got himself all confused when he did not read Moosrtasz's
post closely when he first responded to Sackboy so he thought Moonstasz also
had problems with data files like MLAC19 did. And therefore he did not
understand the reference the Mastered vs. Life File system associated with a
DVD Decoder.

Mine do this same thing, and I gave up. I have a Laptop & desktop XP, and a
Laptop in Vista Prem. If I use a DVD+RW to write to with the Vista, it shows
but will not work on the XP machines. I tried to find some fix and gave up.
I have some recorded DVD+RW stuff that was copied to files on the XP
machines, to an external drive. These will play on XP machines, but will not
play on Vista.
