I'm trying to remove Vista 32-bit and start anew with the 64-bit OS, but
when I try to boot from the dvd-rom it goes into the "Windows is now
loading files" load bar thing and when it's done it just sits at a black
screen. No error message, no working lights from the cpu or dvd drive
after the bar fills and leaves the screen.
Any ideas? All help appreciated.

Palmoon,
Are you sure that your equipment is compatible with a 64 bit operating system? If you were running on 32 bit, and have not changed anything over to 64 bit, then it is obviously not going to work. Please post computer statistics if you have indeed installed everything needed to support a 64 bit operating system, and we will try to advance your question further.

I'm pretty certain my system qualifies. My specs are under the "my
system specs" link in the corner of the posts... but here it is anyway.

palmoon,
Sorry that I was unable to see your computer statistics without asking, but I am replying to you via Windows Mail.
I see no compatibility issues with the hardware that you described, so I'm pretty stuck on this situation. I've had this problem occur a couple of times, but was always self-resolved when I inserted the CD and reinstalled again. Could have been a faulty install, could have been a file not completely instaling right. I would suggest trying again, and then posting the results as soon as you're finished so you can get a hasty response time.

hey, no problem, thanks so much for the replies.
I change my boot priority to cd rom, boot from the x64 dvd, it loads
the initial grey bar, then my monitor just goes black again, kind of
flickers once then stays black (I let it sit for an hour already, tried
3 times so far). Maybe I have a bad disc or something? My 32-bit disc
works fine.

Palmoon,
Here's a question that I haven't asked you yet. Is this CD that you are trying to install from a GENUINE Microsoft copy of Windows Vista? If not, then it could indeed be the image file that you have burned to your cd(s). In order to correct this, I would suggest that you see if you can't get Microsoft to switch your system from the 32 bit to the 64 bit. I don't know if they would do this, but it is definitely worth a shot when all else fails.

I purchased the 32 bit software at retail, and then ordered the 64-bit
software via the order form that comes with it. it's genuine.

Try removing 2GB of the RAM. There is a known problem with installing the RTM version of Vista with 4GB installed. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 but there isn't always an error message.
Update Vista after installation and then replace the 2GB you removed.

The loading bar you see is the installation process files loading into RAM. Obviously, the process isn't starting after loading, and no errors can be flagged at this point. As has already been suggested here, try reducing your RAM to 2GB for the duration of the installation process.

thanks for the input guys, but I'm afriad no luck. I tried with 2gb,
same thing, tried with 1 gb, same thing. I put it all back in to
memtest and it's fine. I even formatted to try and do it but still no
luck, so I just reinstalled 32-bit and now I'm back here :(
I explored the disc, all the files seem to be there.... no clue. lol

My two suggestions may sound odd, but I had the same motherboard and sound card and found the following solution worked:
Update the BIOS to the latest version. In the BIOS, disable onboard sound or better, remove the SoundBlaster card until install is complete.

That seemed like a good idea... but still just get the blank screen
after the files load in...
Something new: I know this sounds ridiculous but it's true: If i hit a
key to boot from cd-rom (How it prompts you, and then ". . ." and then
it boots from the next device in the list, If I push the key on one "."
or two, it goes straight to the load bar... but if I push it on the
third "." it takes me to a menu where it makes me choose to load windows
setup (which still doesn't work), or start memory diagnostc. I hope this
makes sense, I don't know another way to explain it.

New update:
I got it to go to the Official Microsoft load bar, that looks like the
one before Vista boots up, but there was no scrolling green lines
showing anything loading, just frozen. :( I tried 3 or 4 more times and
couldn't get back to it though... still just the black screen.

At this point when it is doing this final boot up use F8 and see if you can get into safe mode. One other thing to try is to load your video card drivers at the load drivers button. You should also unplug any unnecessary peripherals, especially USB.

Well. After trying like 100 more times and swapping ram, video cards,
and HDD with my other PC with x64 on it, I'm getting the ol
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA B.S.O.D. so I guess I've got a hardware
failure somewhere in either my processor or my mainboard. Can anyone
reccomend testing software or another solution? Thanks.

You might want to post in the 64-bit group microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general You should try to run the memory check to see if you have a problem. Numerous op have found a memory problem because the 64-bit system uses memory differently. Also post the rest of the errror e.g. STOP 0x00000050

Drivers also often cause this message, so you disconnect as many peripherals as possible.
