Vista and Microsoft Office 97
John <> 11/19/2008 5:55:48 PM
Has anyone installed MS Office 97 on Vista? (Home Basic version)

Well, looked around at Microsoft, and they claim 97 is not
compatible with Vista... and, of course, have a link to
buy an upgrade

That won't happen 'cause my sister-in-law can just afford
to buy an entry level Dell to replace her old HP that died,
so I've downloaded Open Office

Now, to replace the Office task bar that she REALLY likes,
does anyone know of a free task launcher like the one that
comes with MS Office?

You should try installing it and running it XP compatibility mode. Which
specific Office 97 programs /features does your sister in law require.

Look into the latest version of Open Office. Very nice.

Why do you say that? If it works that's good it it does not then there is
nothing lost. I had one program that I would not install and work until I
installed and ran in XP compatibility mode.

I doubt that there can be much worse than to try to install a program suite
designed for Windows 95, find out that some features don't work, and then
have a hell of a time trying to uninstall/remove it from a system..

I have not yet seen reports of users being unable to uninstall programs that
they installed in XP compatibility mode. But obvisolsy you have or you
would not have made your previous post.
Your previous post. however, would have been a lot more beneficial if you
had pointed out in it that many users have had problems in this area rather
then just stating
"
Not a good idea at all..
"
Without stating why

Hall is a very busy guy replying to all the trolls such as "Alias" and
the other members of that completely worthless cabal - so much so that
I think he is now officially a member. He hardly has time left for
anyone else.

Besides, I don't think he really gives a crap.

I replied to the OP too with a suggestion as to what his sister in law could
do..

People installing Office 97 have come to these newsgroups asking why Office
97 functions don't work, and for info on how to remove a program which does
not want to uninstall cleanly.

XP compatibility mode works for some programs but not all. For instance,
games with a two step installation routine will not load and run.

For the month I tried Vista before upgrading
to XP (yes, XP is definitely an upgrade from Vista) I ran
Word 97, Excel 97, and Publisher from the
Small Business Edition just fine.

Only problem was when you ran the SR-2
update, and that has a workaround:

That's a much better then your previous response of " Not a good idea at
all." and a lot more informative,
Maybe in the future you can provide more informative responses and not just
an unjustified statement.

Both you and Mike need to learn to edit your quotes.

This thread - the way the two of you handle it - is now well over 200

There's also the problem of Outlook 97 not retaining the user
password when run on Vista. You have to type it in every time you start
Outlook.

Ah, true.

That was one of the OTHER reasons I upgraded to XP.

That is not so. That issue is with Outlook 2000 and there is a workaround for that. OL 97 does NOT work on Vista. The earliest version is Outlook 98 that will work on Vista and in a very limited capacity

http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/vista.htm

As far as Office 97 running on Vista. It does BUT with too many error's and issues and it also affects the Vista OS . Not a very bright idea to do this at all

If anything you can try and use Office 98 which I believe will run in a very limited mode

Thanks to everyone for all the comments... I will NOT try to
install Office 97 and, after looking at her Dell order, I see
that MS Works 9 is included, which Microsoft says will use
her existing Office 97 Word and Excel files, so I will try
that before I go any further with new software

If Works9 does not do what she wants with the .doc/.xls files
I've got saved to a USB drive, I'll install Open Office

Google knows all... I found a free program (at home, but I
think the name is FSL Launcher) that has good reviews, so I
will install it so she has something similar to what she is
used to using (Office launch bar floating on the desktop)

Thanks for the notes on O97 not working on Vista... John
