Upgrade to 2008
"David Taylor" <dave[ at ]processeng.com> 12/29/2008 7:52:09 PM
Is there any method to do an "upgrade" from SBS2003R2 to SBS2008 rather than
a migration? It is hard to justify buying a new server box just to do the
upgrade.

Thanks

Dave

There is no way to do a 32 bit to 64 big other than migration.

Image it off to a vmware, swing it back on the same box.

Can the existing box support this?

Thanks for the reply...don't have VMWare so I can't do that. The current
box is a dual Xeon processor 2.4GHz box with 8GB RAM. I purchased a new
RAID controller and hard drives (needed more storage anyway and old RAID
controller was not compatible with '08) thinking I would install and try
moving over data from the SBS03 hard drives. Leaving the 03 hard drives
in-tact for when things invariably didn't work :-)

We're very small business (8 people) so the thought of just recreating
accounts etc is not the end of the world...but I have got to get email to
move over (critical) and, unfortunately, we have stuff in SharePoint too.
Other critical area is our public website (old ASP - pre .NET - pages but
still used extensively). Everything else is mostly just user files (I assume
they will move over without incident - even if its just from a backup. Any
ideas on getting just email to transfer without "migrating"?

Thanks
Dave

email - have the users save everything to PSTs. Then put them back after.
Don't forget to set a known administrative password on everyone's
workstations.

SharePoint - there's a version upgrade involved, so it doesn't migrate all
that well even with the official migration path.

Thanks...I'll give that a shot with the PST files. As for SharePoint,
sounds like a good reason to junk SharePoint altogether...it has never
upgraded correctly - hence two versions of it running on my current SBS
installation.

Gets me thinking that maybe the upgrade isn't worth the hassle...I'm not
sure what, if anything, I'm actually gaining from what I'm sure will be a
painful experience. I got the SBS08 via software assurance...but that
doesn't mean I *must* upgrade of course :-)

You say you're running two versions of SharePoint on your server now - are
you using SharePoint 3.0 as your production site? If so, WSS 3.0 moves much
easier than WSS 2.0

Well, personally, I wouldn't hesitate to move. But then, I made the move to
64-bit a long time ago, and with SBS 2008 Premium, I get a second server to
run TS RemoteApps on.

In addtion to all the other benefits of 64 bit, remote apps ROCK! But maybe
I've understated that.

RemoteApps are THE killer feature in Server 2k8. Even more than Hyper-V. I
_live_ in RemoteApps. (I'm running Windows Mail as a RemoteApp, for
example.)
