Install Valid version of XP
johnsail 12/30/2008 11:07:02 AM
Hi
Have an HP machine that had a vakid copy of XP Pro installed. Licence no on
sticker on machine etc etc. Cleared the hard drive to reinstall but no longer
have the HP disc that came with the machine.
HP say that it is microsoft problem - MS say that is HP problem although
they confirm that the licence no is valid.
I have a valid install disk from another of my machines but this won't
accept the HP oem licence no. and to have a copy of XP installed on more than
one machine is not allowed.
Where do I go from here?

The best and easiest solution is to contact HP and purchase a recovery disk.
This is very inexpensive, around $20. If the machine is old and HP no
longer has your recovery disk available, without the COA sticker with HP's
product key you'll need to purchase a full retail version of XP. NewEgg and
Amazon still have them.

The cheaper solution would be for the OP to find someone to lend him a
Microsoft XP Pro OEM installation disk and use the product key he already
has.

He doesn't have a Product Key. If you re-read his original post:

"Licence no on sticker on machine etc etc. Cleared the hard drive to
reinstall but no longer have the HP disc that came with the machine."

Otherwise I would certainly agree with you - use a branded HP OEM if you can
find one (*not* a recovery disk) or a generic OEM. But you need to use the
Product Key on the COA for that. Even if he hadn't "cleared the hard
drive", a key finder utility will only show HP's volume license key in
Windows and this won't work for reinstallation. He needs the Product Key
off the COA if he isn't going to use an HP recovery disk or buy a new
retail copy.

I think it's just your interpreting it differently than I am

"Have an HP machine that had a vakid copy of XP Pro installed. Licence no on
sticker on machine :

I take that as he has the "license no (no meaning number, i.e product key)
on the box.

Quite possibly you're right. So if the OP decides to grace us by posting
back with what he really meant, we'll know for sure. In any case, he's got
the complete answer he asked for.

I have a legal Windows XP Home CD with ProductKey you can have for $20 if
you wish.

It was installed in my daughter's computer that had the hard drive wiped
clean to D.O.D. specifications. The computer went to Goodwill sans
operation system. Daughter now has a new laptop with Windows Vista.
